This week we recorded 2 of our songs. We only chose to do 2 of the songs due to time constraints, as we wouldn’t have time to record and mix all 3 of the songs. The songs we chose to mix was the 2nd and 3rd song, “Last days of our lives” and “Let go”. We chose these songs as we thought these were the 2 strongest ones. However an issue with the process was that Ben H (the student) couldn’t attend the session, so Ben F (the tutor) had to fill in for him. He didn’t know the parts before hand, so it was a bit of a challenge getting it to sound the same as with Ben H playing it.
The instruments were getting recorded on the first day, then the vocals the next day. It started off with sound-checking all the instruments, and the drums were first. I had to play the bass drum and snare drum separately, the play the whole kit together. Then the bass and then the guitar got sound-checked. There were no issues with this at the time. After this we then started playing the songs. Even though Tom and Millie’s vocals weren’t getting recorded, they were in the control room singing along so the songs could be played to a high standard. The first few takes of “Last days of our lives” went well, then we did “Let go”. That went well, however there was an issue with the mix, as there was a crackling sound coming from the snare drum mic. This made the takes we did so far invalid as they had this sound. Lewis fixed this by changing mac. This was strange as this sound didn’t show up on the soundchecks however it just appeared. After this all the other takes went smoothly. We ran through both the songs a couple times and then I was finished. The bass and drums got recorded first, so after me and Abi left, Ben did a few more takes on the guitar. Then the next day Millie and Tom recorded vocals.
All in all, I enjoyed this process and it went well. There were only a few issues and we overcame them quickly. If I did this again I would probably try and set it up myself as that is something that I would like to learn about it.
