As developing my first track and figuring out the technical side of this project took me way longer than expected, I had to simplify the rest of my performance. I chose to cover a pop song and a hip-hop song that I personally like. I also chose them because the drums in these are quite simple and didn’t take me long to learn. With “Treasure” there is lots of room for expression, experimentation, and making the drums your own. With “Stronger” it is a really nice drum beat that is the vocal point of the song besides the vocal, and due to the nature of the kick drum pattern there is a lot of room for variations on the drum beat.
As you can see I have nailed the songs structure and separate parts. Some improvements are to differentiate the verse and the chorus, I could change the hi-hat patterns, and keep the bass drum patterns completely separate, and the fills sound very rough and could do with either more practice or changing them. However, this song is coming along nicely.
This is the first time I tried to learn this track, and it is very rough. I have got the basic beat down, however I keep going out of time. I also tried playing it with different hi-hat patterns, in the original track there isn’t any hi-hat when the main drum beat is playing, but that still needs work, especially the 16th notes. In the chorus, I am also slightly out of time, and I need to work on what I’m playing for that bit. However, it is a good start and with a bit of practice I’ll be there.
This is a much better version of the cover than my last one. I have the song’s structure down with all the different parts. I am not going out of time either anymore, and I have worked on the hi-hat patterns to be able to switch between them when it suits the song. I am also changing the foot pattern whenever I want which shows I am comfortable with this beat. The chorus is improved, however is still not that interesting from a drumming point of view. The ending could also be improved as it sounds better as a full bar of just hitting the quarter notes with a cymbal, instead of half the bar. However, this song is coming along very well and I will be ready to perform it very soon.
