Analysis of film scenes.

Old Boy 2003 Mystery/thriller
The film Old boy is a dark and twisted film about a man who is captured and locked up for 15 years in a room by his captor. The protagonist Dae-Su Oh gains anger and resentment being locked up for 15 years for no good reason however when he finds out the reason he is mortified.
I like this film because of its great use of cinematography and story. The cinematography shows the shocking moments and action in a thrilling way. The extreme close-ups in the film are used well to always show the emotion and expression of the protagonist and what he’s going through. The film has a variety of shot types demonstrating the character going insane and the pov of the protagonist going crazy being locked up for 15 years. The film also has many good smooth transitions from past to present and the change of setting. The transitions of past and present are done well through the use of items and props from that time in the story. The film also uses VFX for one scene where there are ants crawling on his face on a close-up shot to reflect what the character is feeling and going through. The film has some contrasting shots between the dialogue between the protagonist and antagonist. There are also close-ups of torture the protagonist puts his enemies through to make you uneasy and be at the edge of your seat looking at some of the gruesome scenes. The visuals are also intriguing when he is in a lucid state when he is hallucinating and hypnotised to transition to the next part of the story.
In the fight scene, the director uses a constant side shot scene with no cuts to demonstrate the constant fighting in the scene. The use of the side shot allows you to see the whole of the fight in its entirety. We get to see constant action, unlike modern action fight scenes that have many cuts that take away from the thrill of watching fight scenes. The main protagonist has a hammer in his jacket constantly and in many scenes, he has it in his hands showing how is constantly going to fight someone demonstrating Mise en scene. The film is a mystery thriller.
Stutterer 2015 Social realism
The film Stutterer is a film about a person who has speech problems and is constantly unable to say the words he truly wants to say. The film goes through his life showing his struggles and leads up to him meeting a person who he has been talking to for a while online.
In the Stutterer, I like the scene where Greenwood talks with his father while they play playing a game of chess because we get to hear what Greenwood is thinking and what he’s going to say however he’s not quite able to say exactly. The reaction the father gives demonstrates his father accepts Greenwood for who he is and is a loving father. In this scene over the shoulder shot is used to express the reactions of Greenwood’s father and emphasizes Greenwood’s face while speaking to show Greenwood’s struggle at talking and emotion. There is no music in this scene and we get to see the realism of the shot.
Spider-man into the spider-verse
This animated movie is about a character called miles morales finding out that he is an alternate version of spiderman in the Spider-Man universe and this is his journey on becoming Spider-Man.
In this scene called What’s up danger many dynamic camera shot types and angles are used to reflect his leap of faith and courage into becoming Spider-Man. The camera shot types go well with Spider-Man’s dynamic range of motion and the camera follows and pans on where Spider-Man is moving to. The tracking shot types demonstrates the speed of Spider-Man and shows the action well. The movements of Spider-Man and very fast-paced camera movements and shot types emphasize his movement. The audio codes like the music and the dialogue from the characters at the start help build tension create build up creating a thrilling scene. The music works well with this scene as it keeps up with Spider-Man’s actions and comes to a stop at the end of the action. The music is non-diegetic the character can’t hear it however we as the audience hear it.
Target audience research. This will need to be done in order to know who you are aiming your film at and this target audience research will affect the success of your film and poor research may effect how the story of the film plays out because you may wanna include things in the film that resonates with your audience. For my primary research my source of information would be surveys questionnaires and interviews on my target audience to get to know them better to help effect the narrative of my film that could be more relatable, beneficial and entertaining for my target audience. For secondary research, I can look at online statistics and documents on how well films did. I can also use articles to help and influence my target audience research.
As for research about this film, I will be taking inspiration from my cousin brother experience as he is British Bangladeshi. He was born in Bangladesh and then came to the UK so I will be taking this from his journey and experiences first coming to the UK. I may exaggerate some part of the storyline of the film to get a point across so things in the film. I don’t think I will be able to show the Journey of immigrating to a new country as well as experiencing it yourself but I hope that my film can show a light on what some people go through. The limits of a short film will mean that there is a limit to how many scenes and how much information I can put into the film. So all the scenes may need to be meaning full to the story, drive the narrative or get an idea across to the viewer.
The target audience is made up of 4 main sections age, gender, location, income level.
Age is about what age range are you creating films for and how will it be relatable to them. Are you creating media for kids, teenagers, adults or the elderly? Different age groups will watch different types of films. Age ratings are a way films separate content and films for the right age groups. Such as U for universal pg 13 rated R and much more so I will need to consider these ratings when creating my film.
Gender is if the film is aimed towards a certain gender like is the film about women or men. my film will not be directed towards a certain gender so both genders will be able to watch my film.
Location is the film local, national or international audience for me I’m considering making my film targeted towards a national audience in the UK because I have a sense of what the UK audience enjoys like our sarcasm and satire. However I’m not sure if I should make the film have sarcasm and satire as it may distract from the point of the film.
For income level this does not have a play in my film as my film will be free. But some films may consider it being a paid entry film because of the time and work put into the film. Big budget films like the marvel films it would have a cost to watch the film so that the work they put into the film will turn a profit. The cost of watching a film will effect how many people will watch it in some cases.

Movie narratives
A movie that presents its story in chronological order (Old boy 2003) because its shows it’s ending in linear way as he’s captured and then goes to find the person the has captured him.
A movie that presents its story a non linear way can be (tenet 2020) because the first half is linear however the second half of the movie it loops round and retells the story. The story makes you rewatch the movie as it is confusing as how the story is played out.
open audience film is left to happen next like the tv show (Squid game 2021)as the show does not tell you what happens next it lets you witness what will happen next and who will die to the rounds of the game.
closed and definite ending can be (Romeo and Juliet) cause of the define ending a the movie and play being a tragedy. The show is written to have a ending that ends in a catastrophe and thats the trait of the play written by Shakespeare. Another film could be (Avengers end game 2019) and the ending is that the avengers save the world for thanos and they kill thanos. As usual the heroes always come out on top in super hero films.
Multi strands film the animated tv show (Odd taxi 2021) is a animated show that you think that is just about a taxi driver doing his regular job ever he meets different people that enter his taxi and he soon find out how each of his customers are related and interlocking with each other. (Spider man into the spider verse) is also a multi strand movie as we see all the spidermen come together in one universe to defeat the same enemy.
restricted and unrestricted audience knowledge. (Sherlock 2010) is a series that uses restricted and unrestricted information when Holmes demonstrates information and his thoughts on the crime scenes.
