Welcome to Bradford, a city in West Yorkshire, with a population of over 546,000 in 2022 it was crowned City of Culture 2025, however, two areas of the city are drastically different. Today we will be exploring two different areas that are under the Bradford council in Ilkley and Gilington. In December 2022 Girlington reported 230 crimes whereas Ilkley only had 4 in the same time frame. So I sat down with the MP for Gilrington to find out why the area has gone from being one of the richest areas of Bradford to one of the most deprived.
Just 12 miles away from Girlington is Ilkley, a town in the yorkshire dales with a population of over 15,000 and in 2022 Ilkley was voted the best place to live in the UK by the Sun. I walked around Ilkley to compare what the areas looked like and when I arrived I immediately saw a difference between the two areas. Ilkley has the highest number of its population with white ethnicity with 97.3% compared to just 14.3% in the toller ward where Girlington is located. In Ilkley only 0.2% of its population are of Pakistani ethnicity which is the lowest across the whole of Bradford. In the Toller ward it has the highest population of Pakistani ethnicity within Bradford with 72.3% of its population coming from Pakistani ethnicity. Even though Ilkley is part of Bradford council it is the only Town in the whole city with a Leeds postcode. In 2017 Ilkley grammar school was rated outstanding by ofsted where Whetley Academy in Girlington was rated good. Ilkley also had 2 schools voted the best in the North by the Sunday Times. This is a massive contrast compared to Girlignton where the MP mentioned the education levels are not up to the rest of Bradford.
