POSTER ANALYSIS

In this task i was tasked to analyse 5 posters, and talk about how they relate to the plot and theme of the movie, using different aspects such as colour, theme, ideas, tone ect.

I did this for 5 movies, and attempted the separate the genres the best i could to present the tones conveyed by posters and how they are different.

This is a poster for The Dark Knight Rises (Directed by Christopher Nolan) The poster helps present the movies protagonist (Batman) by showing an ample amount of bats forming his figure in the poster, it also establishes the tone/color of the film with the excessive and sole use of black on his character, establishing that the film will be dark and gritty, the Idea of batman being made of bats helps let the audience know that he is stealthy/silent.

Split (Directed by M. Night Shyamalan) immediately shows the theme of the film by showing the character on the poster (a silhouette) being split in half, this shows the audience that the character may have conflict with himself, as he’s split in two essentially (in the movie the character has 23 personalities) The color may foreshadow that the film is dark, and the range of cracks with the subtle little characters inside them show even further the depths of how split his personalities are.

The poster of joker (Directed by Todd Phillips) also immediately shows that the Jokers character cares little for the public, actively dancing/cheering/shouting into the air, this sets the theme of apathy towards the public that is shown throughout the movie, the shot of him being above the stairs may be another reference to him becoming the character he does in the film, showing his journey to get there, the bright vibrant colors show jokers character as a lively one, one that is active and explosive.

Jaws (Directed by Steven Spielberg) is a class poster, is shows the audience instantly the theme of the movie (that its in the ocean, and features a shark) it shows them the main colors (blue) and the theme of horror as the woman shown swimming above is obviously about to be eaten by the shark below, it even shows the audience what the main antagonist will be (Jaws)

Django Unchained (Directed by Quinten Tarantino) Presents the protagonist on centre stage, it sets the tone of the movie with the blood red colours, and sets the theme of the movie with his western cowboy esc attire, it also presents the idea that he is a lawful character by the stance he is taking, showing the audience that perhaps the movie will present him in a positive light, showing him in the centre with all the other characters shocked and appalled as to him being there (showing the racism the film entails)
