MOVIE CONVENTIONS

I was asked to explain genre conventions that are similar to the movie i plan to make, since my movie is a time loop the genres i believe are closest would be Sci-Fi and Comedy, as my movie will include elements from both Genres.

Sci-Fi Genre Conventions

The following are common conventions in a Sci-Fi setting;

  • Time travel
  • Teleportation
  • Mind control, telepathy, and telekinesis
  • Aliens, extraterrestrial lifeforms, and mutants
  • Space travel and exploration
  • Interplanetary warfare
  • Parallel universes
  • Fictional worlds
  • Alternative histories
  • Speculative technology
  • Superintelligent computers and robots
  • Magic

My movie idea consists of a time loop trope, which is closest related to the Sci-Fi genre, which can include time travel (which is essentially what a time loop is.)

Sci-Fi conventions can be anything from Time Travel to Interplanetary warfare, the Sci-Fi tropes interlink with my short film in several ways, the main ones being Time Travel and Teleportation, perhaps even a Parallel universe.

Time Travel:

My movie involves a time loop, so the character is constantly travelling through time every time the loop resets, so this ties in heavily because the main plot point of the film is that time isn’t exactly.

Teleportation:

My movie links in with teleportation as every time the loop restarts the character is essentially teleported back to his bed constantly, he experiences the sensation of teleportation constantly.

Parallel Universe:

The movie may take place in a parallel universe much like our own but with this one difference, where time isn’t constant and is constantly resetting for two people in particular.

Sci-Fi Genre Character Conventions

The Sci-Fi Genre has many different types of characters that seem to appear, many of which are specific to Sci-Fi, these include the following;

  • Robots
  • Androids
  • Aliens
  • Humanoids
  • Scientists
  • Clones
  • Brainiacs
  • Mutants
  • Excessively smart people

My movie only takes certain parts of the Sci-Fi genre, so most of these characters will not appear, but the one that will appear will be the main character who will be an Excessively smart person, as he has been in the loop for an unimaginable amount of time, he has amassed a very large amount of knowledge on essentially every topic, apart from this, perhaps clones as each loop may consist of a separate version of the protagonist.

Comedy Genre Conventions

The following are common conventions in a comedy setting;

  • Exaggerations
  • Jokes
  • Making light of a bad situation
  • Bright social areas
  • Emphasis on certain props
  • Idiotic Characters
  • Dark Humour
  • Slapstick comedy

Of these conventions the ones that most closely relate to my movie are the following;

Jokes:

Making Light Of Bad Situations:

Dark Humour:
