Cross Cut

CROSS CUTTING

What is cross cutting?

Cross cutting is when a cut is used to link 2 scenes or show the similarity between 2 scenes more more, such as an action fight scene where 2 characters are fighting simultaneously, cross cuts would be used to cut between the characters fighting so the audience can focus on both at the same time, the scenes don’t have to be happening at the same time but more often then not they are.

Essentially cross cutting is cutting from one scene to another to establish a relationship or a bond between the two scenes, it can also be used to build tension or suspense.

Cross cuts can be used to build suspense and drama, as seen in the example.

Within the scene cross cuts are used separating the murderer and Sherlock/person, they are continuously used all the way up until the murderer is busted by the police, the cuts are used to make the audience believe that Sherlock has given the murderer the right address, all the way up until expectations are subverted by the show.

After watching some videos and doing some secondary research, i understood the basic guide to cross cutting and why it is used, there are many examples of cross cutting, a recent one being Avengers Infinity War where cross cutting is used to swap between the battle on Titan and on Earth/Wakanda.

The cuts can be used like this to show the audience that several battles are going on, it can even swap between more then 2 fights, this allows directors to show the audience several fights or scenes at the same time, letting them focus on certain aspects of the scenes, such as punches/kicks/grabbing props.

The cross cuts used in my project about the Tesco heist would be prime examples of cross cuts, along with cuts going back to flash backs or things happening simultaneously, for example if a character was thinking of something the camera could cut to what they where thinking of, a scene involving the subject.

Cross cutting can also be used for capturing menial tasks too, such as a blade cutting some carrots, and could be used to show the gradual progression of the meal being prepared.
