Podcast – It can consist of two or more people talking about almost any subject you can think of. The usual length for a podcast, depending on the subject is about 2 and a half hours. From technology to makeup, even perhaps technology to makeup. They can be loosely planned out or scripted and thought through. Only veering off their intended subject when they’re distracted. Some Podcasts may have a camera to show the sets, host/s, guest/s and in some cases fun outfits that the host might be wearing.
It is a program made available through the use of a digital platform/s, websites and apps. Like Audible, Spotify, Google and Apple Podcasts and for more visual Podcasts there is YouTube.
Subjects and Genre
Subjects and Genres can range from anything; all things are suitable for a podcast. As said before. Some Podcasts are more structured and planned out than others. The most popular genre is comedy. However the most popular types of Podcasts are weirdly political. There are a few that do lean more toward the side of comedy or at least have a comedy twang.
Podcasts – The Joe Rogan Experience and Podcast but Outside

A fantastic example is The Joe Rogan Experience. Launched in 2009, it quickly became one of the most popular podcasts in the world. There are a few podcasts that grab the viewers attention by the great variety of guests they host. This podcast is one of them. Some off his guests are very reliable science figures. With Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Professor Brian Cox just to name a few.
However with the more reliable guests also comes the side with his more controversial guests. The guest best known for spreading miss information on the Joe Rogan Experience is Alex Jones, he himself has previously found himself at the foot of a $965 million lawsuit for spreading miss information about the victims of Sandy Hook. As you can probably gather Joe Rogan’s podcast isn’t too planned out, leaving his producer with notes to pass along when necessary. Even with the slight planning this still sometimes doesn’t work. With Joe getting high with Elon Musk and Snoop Dog.
This being said this does bring a great deal of unintentional comedy and levity to his show.
His main demographic and target audience is 24 – 35 year old males. With 35 – 40 year old males being close behind. The sex that watches this podcast has quite a strong hold on the podcast itself. With a great deal of his audience being politically right leaning. So when in the podcast the host discusses more neutral or more left leaning politics the audience has a tendency to outrage and boycott the podcast with its associated platform. In this case that would be exclusively Spotify. The audio format is Mp3. The mic he uses is a Shure SM7B. The Podcast is also viewable so he has a camera setup.
One Podcast that I enjoy is ‘Podcast but Outside.’ As you can probably guess it’s a podcast but outside. With the main two hosts being Cole Hersch and Andrew Michaan. Their podcast features fantastic interviews with random strangers who just happen to walk by and the odd guest host that Cole and Andrew have previously worked with or guests that they plan to work with in the future. The subject matter ranges drastically. From lifestyle to engineering. It all depends on the what the guest/s wants to talk about. It’s also the only podcast that pays you for being a guest.

This Podcast is categorised as a comedy podcast and I’d agree with that. Both guests are comedians and due to the nature of their setup, it’s rife with comedic opportunity. With people coming up messing with flow of the podcast, trying to catch the viewers attention to people photo-bombing, striking poses visible to camera. And other people just telling and sharing really funny stories.
Their main demographic seems to be 20 – 25 Year olds, their male audience just barely over takes their female audience. For this podcast the sex of the viewers isn’t really a big factor. The audio format is in MP3 as it’s available on both YouTube and Spotify. The Mics that they use is the Shure SM7B. This podcast, unlike The Joe Rogan Experience, is available on YouTube and Spotify.
The reason that I use both of these Podcasts as examples is because they both have the tone and feel of what I want out of my podcast. I know the subjects are vastly different from my idea, which is about movies and show. I feel as though that the biggest under looked aspect to gather an audience is, how does the podcast engage with the listeners.
My Podcast Idea

I think that for my podcast I’d like to talk about movie and Tv shows and the ‘What ifs’. Talk about the original plans for certain productions. One example would be James Cameron’s Spiderman which had planned to be released back some time in the mid 90’s. Another example would be the early 2000’s DC Superhero movies that were in development up until around 2004 or 3. And with this I can talk about the behind the scenes of certain productions too. This will require a lot of research and fact checking. There’s also a chance that sources will contradict each other as dead movie productions tend to have most of the information buried with it. But more recent dead movie productions have a chance to be preserved thanks to the internet and great example of a more recent movie production would be 2017’s Justice League. This film was originally directed by Zack Snyder but due a few issues and disagreeing with DC studios he left. And taking over the directing helm was Joss Whedon, going as so far to bring back an original actor just to cg out their facial hair. He basically made a new film.
Because of the nature of the content I’d be talking about I’d guess the audience would a mix of 19 – 24 years olds and people that are interested in that sort of thing. That being Movies, TV shows or Superhero Movies and TV shows and the makings of. I have no real interest in having a ‘set target audience’ as who ever is interested in my podcast is welcome.
I would also probably have a laid-back feel, with the podcast being rather chill. With some notes to keep track of when and what to talk about as to be sure not to repeat myself. To keep the flow and movement steady and at a nice pace. Depending on where the podcast will be uploaded I’ll add some concept art and storyboards as well as notes to the video if allowed.
