Project 1 – Task 4 – Mini BMX – Evaluation and Reflection

Task – 4 Evaluation and Reflection

Evaluation

I made an advertisement for a finger mount BMX using and editing with Adobe Premier pro, After Effects and Davinci Resolve.

The Team I was in whilst filming had a very collaborative dynamic. We worked well together. All sharing and bouncing ideas off of one an other. I was wanting to parody and poke fun at advertisements featuring a similar product in the early 2000’s. The advertisement was done by a team, consisting of myself, Elora and Asia. We all filmed the same product using some of the same shots with slight variations. We storyboarded and planned it out thoroughly and used these variants on some of the shots to allow us to demonstrate the use and function product in different ways if we needed to in our own adverts. However, we couldn’t film in certain locations or film certain things, that were initially in the storyboard. To get around this, we used alternate locations and improvised with alternate shots with the locations that we had available to us.

The advertisement was shot on a Zoom Q8. The quality wasn’t the best and resulted in the advertisement having a cheap aesthetic, which was ideal for me as this is the type of advertisement that I had based my version on/parodying. To fully achieve this aesthetic, we utilised various shooting techniques, including the use of some forced perspective. This had the effect of making the mini BMX bike look closer to a regular sized bike.

Of the variant shots that were filmed, only 2 were used in the final product. I used a variety of editing software as previously stated as I was more comfortable using Davinci Resolve as compared to Adobe Premier Pro, my limited experience using the latter (4 weeks), when compared to my 3 years of experience using the former. However this did allow me a chance to develop my understanding and confidence with the use of Adobe Premier Pro. Despite the initial difficulty of navigating and familiarising myself with the layout of the app, i.e. finding certain tools and effects, I feel that after completing this assignment my ability to use this platform has developed. For shots that required a green screen I used a website called Runwayml as it uses a.i to generate a green screen, I find it a lot more convenient and I don’t have to keep people waiting to use the green screen in college. There was only one shot where I used the green screen and I edited that so it becomes a still image. Effectively making it a still image and having it float around the galaxy exclaiming that it want’s to be bought. It’s quiet silly but this is added humour to the parody.

Very comical and good editing

Camera quality could’ve been better, voice over could’ve been more legible.

Reflection

We all used the same cameras however a few people used their phones to record the ad. I wasn’t aware that we could use our phones and next time I’ll use the equipment I have available to me. If we’re allowed.

I worked with headphones so whilst editing the narration it sounded fine to me. But I naturally speak quite mumbled. So next time I will work on speaking clearly and I will use the speaker audio as a posed to just the headphone audio. As using headphones squashes the audio depth and all additional sounds.

I found that planning the video was rather fun, hunting and searching for ideas about the advertisement in a team definitely helped with gathering a clearer image of the advert. I was in a team with Elora and Asia. We all did equal parts to contribute ideas and our individual plans to help one another. We used some of the same shots, we recorded different versions of the same shots to add variety and to help with the creative process of editing.

I would have liked to have known that if we had better equipment we could’ve used that instead of the camera and equipment provide. I understand that’s not fair to allow some people better equipment and others college’s and that if we used are own camera’s and microphones it would’ve eaten up valuable time.

The editing process for me was the most challenging. I did have an idea of the type of edit I wanted but there was just an oddity that I wasn’t use to. The oddity being the app we used to edit the video on Abode Premier Pro. We as a class are here to learn how to use the Adobe suite but I struggle to learn it. Just too be clear I have learned to use Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe After Effects I’m just use to using Davinci Resolve to edit, colour grade and add light vfx. Thankfully I was able to use Davinci in tandem with Premier Pro. Levitating some stress and worries helping to make what I believe to be a really fun final showcase of the product.

The Advert is a parody of early 2000’s ad’s featuring the same product. And I believe that the final ad I made using both a mix of Premier and Davinci was what slightly better than the video I planned. As trying to figure out how to make a certain effect was extremely fun, stressful but fun as I was always learning.

I confirm that the attached assessment is all my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself and sources have been appropriately referenced.
