Film Scene Analysis

KickAss Opening Scene – The film starts of with a wide shot to show to the viewers the setting of the film which can easily be identified as New York due to their Iconic Buildings. The Camera then slowly zooms into the character on screen. Whilst all of this is happening dialogue can be heard on top of the opening scene. The Camera then switches to a top view going above the character and looking down the building which shows how high he is as the floor can be seen very far away from the characters view. The shot then changes to give us an POV of the civilians on the ground looking up at this supposed hero. The character then jumps and changes shot angles to show the characters motions, the audience clapping and then the POV of what the character sees whilst falling at high speeds towards the ground. This is then ended with the character falling flat onto a car. This then ends with the character voicing over to give us more info that the character that some of us may have thought was him was actually not him.

Erased Christmas Tree Scene – At the start of the scene Satoru (the main character) is leading Kayo up this mountain to see the Christmas tree which is his own spot he has found. This walking towards this spot metaphorically shows that Satoru is leading Kayo to a better, more enjoyable life. Whilst they stand in place both Satoru and Kayo breathe at the same time for a second but then Satoru breathing pattern changes as it becomes slightly faster then Kayo. Satoru breathing at a faster pace is not due to him being out of shape as he is seen before these scenes to be somewhat athletic instead this implies that he is excited to see Kayo’s expression and show her this beautiful sight. To show this beautiful scenery and the looks on the characters face the camera zooms into Kayo’s face to show her surprise and shock. The camera then shows 2 or 3 angles of the tree which it later then gives us an under view of it to show the beauty of the tree and glistening of the icicles shining with the night sky and stars. This camera going from underneath both the characters shows that Satoru has turned Kayo’s world upside down. The camera ends with a zoom in on Kayo’s face who then smiles and ends with another shot of the sky then ending it with the two holding hands.

One Piece Episode Of East Blue – The scene starts off with Nami in distress looking down knowing that she can’t do anything the camera then moves towards Nami’s face showing her expression. The camera then zooms out with the background being white, then it shows the antagonist and this repeats with Nami tearing up and Arlong laughing at her pain and suffering. This shows Nami’s loss of hope. The camera then changes to show Nami’s back mostly identifying the tattoo that she was forced to have by Arlong to show that she is his slave. Nami then looks at her tattoo and with pure hatred which shown when the camera changes angle to her facial expressions she then grabs the knife on the floor next to her and starts repeatedly stabbing where her tattoo is. The camera angles then change at a fast speed to show how much she despises Arlong and that she is powerless all she can do is stab her own tattoo. Her friend Luffy then grabs her wrist to stop her from stabbing herself. The camera angle changes to show this goofy characters face which for once is serious as he knows his friend is in danger but he does not offer her help as he is waiting for an answer. The camera angle shows both characters which then Nami crying says Luffy, the camera then goes to Nami’s face. Nami is shown to be a little hesitant as she does not immediately ask for help and this is also shown through Nami not facing Luffy in the eye. She then turns around and says help me. The camera angle then changes to face Luffy which his facial expression is purposely not shown as to let his straw hat stand out whilst he picks it up. He then places it on Nami’s head and walks off in the near distance. The camera angle changes to show Nami facing Luffy and Luffy then inhaling to announce to the world that he will. The angle then changes to Nami’s face who is letting it all out. She then changes facial expression whilst reminiscing to the time when Luffy announced that his straw hat is his treasure and that he would not let anyone touch it. This shows to the viewer that Luffy will always trust and help his friend but at the same time he is not some white knight who goes out to offer his help to others instead they must ask him. The camera work shows that sure Luffy can be goofy at times but when he is serious he means business and will help his friends no matter what the problem they face as long as they ask for his help. This scene lets his personality shine the most.

Narrative Devices

Linear – This is when the events are simply shown in chronological order. An example of this is ‘Toy Story’ (1995, John Lasseter) which starts with woody who is then introduced to buzz. They soon get lost and have to find their way back.

Non-Linear – This is when the events are not in a chronological order and the ending could be the beginning of the movie. An example of this is ‘Deadpool’ (2016, Tim Miller) where it starts off with him and goes to flashbacks.

Open – An open narrative is when the ending leaves off on a cliff hanger and lets you wonder what is going to happen next its open to the watcher’s interpretation. An example of this is ‘It Chapter 1’ (2017, Andrés Muschietti) This is because we see It being defeated by the kids but it doesn’t show that he has been killed they also promise to meet back up if it comes back which means there has to be more.

Closed – Definite ending and conclusion for the audience.

Multistrand – Several stories and perspectives being told with a link between them. An Example of this is ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider verse’. This is because there are multiple spider-men that have their own stories told throughout the movie which links them together.

Restricted/Unrestricted – Restricted narration is when we as the audience does not know as much as other characters and can only see from a character’s perspective and we learn more through the character. ‘Your Name’ is an example of this as it is about two characters from different times which we do not know of and we learn that one of the characters get their village struck by a meteor. We only learn this once the characters find out.

There are 8 types of characters:

The False Hero – Delgan

Idea

My film is about two men who were destined to die one day but mysteriously avoided it. Which later results the both suddenly brought to an infinite white room with nothing but themselves and a piece of paper saying, ‘You have been banned from existence’.

Influences

I have been influenced by ‘Doom Patrol’ a little cause of the white void present in that series, instead the white void in my short film doesn’t seem like it is controlled by anyone it seems more like a space where anomalies are thrown into. Another show that has influenced this idea is ‘The Amazing World Of Gumball’ I remember an episode where they go into the void to save their friend as they were rejected by existence but they were frozen, so they didn’t have to live through being alone in an empty space unlike the two of my characters.

Characters

Character 1: This character is someone who is serious and acts using his brain. The only thing in his mind is success and his own gain.

Character 2: This character is someone who is reckless and carefree. They don’t care about consequences and wants to bring joy and laughter.

Character 3: This character is in fact the white void. They talk through written messages and control the void slightly to mess around with the characters within the void.

Film Genre

Comedy

Camera: The camera’s movements are very naturalistic in comedies as they create a sense of ‘realism’ making situations more relatable.

Lighting: Bright, colourful lighting to go wth the upbeat tone of the film.

Sound Effects: These are used to enhance the effect of comedy in some situations.

Editing: Comedic timing is key and this is mainly achieved through editing as you would have to make cuts to relevant actions and make sure the timing is perfect.

Mise-en-scene: Costumes and make-up are exaggerated to create a laughable character props can also help depending how the actors use these.

Target Audience

My target audience is 15+ as this film will contain some dark humor and words that are more suitable for older people rather than younger. So as well as it contains comedy it will contain some black comedy too.

Movie Poster Analysis

Your Name

It shows a clear split in the middle of the poster to show that both of the characters live in different places or that they are living in different time periods. The split is shaped like a star which shows their hope or can portray a new beginning of sorts for the characters. The shooting stars in the sky look like they were merged together and split off into their own paths showing these two characters become connected in some shape and form which they then have to be separated through some unknown reason. The main characters are established straight away as they are the only two characters in this poster. One person is seems to be living in a city whereas the other seems to be in the country side which makes you guess how they would meet as it seems like a romance, comedy film. The poster has done something smart which also adds to the romance as the positioning they have done with the two shooting stars and the bright star in the middle creates a flower if flipped around. The flower being flipped around shows that both of their worlds will easily be flipped upside down. The typography used is both clear and not as their want to blend it in with background and make it seem like the characters will blend together well. I have watched the movie and what happens to the two is that they switch bodies sometimes which makes it smart in a way that the writing would blend together.

The Witcher Nightmare Of The Wolf

The background has some icy mountains to show the calmness the main character is feeling. This helps with the main characters pose and facial emotions but towards the bottom this calmness is contrasted with the colour of blood and anger as well as some demons which shows that the character can never truly be in peace as chaos always follows behind him. The typography used clearly stands out but not like a sore thumb it lets itself blend in a little and is thin to show that the character may be on their last straw. The words used at the bottom is “face your demons” this seems to be hinting at an internal conflict the character may have. This poster shows that the character wants to have a peaceful life which he can enjoy easily and have enough money to do what he wants to but its shown that Witchers which he is are people who kill monsters for money meaning he will never be able to fully enjoy his life. It is also clearly depicted this will be some type of action film as he will have to fight demons as well as him holding a sword.

Weathering With You

The image gives a cool and dream-like atmosphere as the character is shown in the sky falling where they seem to be seeing water like creatures moving around in the sky with a few islands which seem to cloudlike with grass on them. The water on the bottom right seem to resemble fish meaning that they may be an importance in this movie which will be centred around the main character falling. The typography used is white coloured to let it stand out but it blends well with the other colours as they seem to be floating like clouds with similar colours. This movie is about a girl with the power to change the weather through this little sneak of visuals it seems like this will be a supernatural phenomena as well as a romance movie. This can be seen with the blue like ribbon of water flowing and the pink dreamy colours used at the bottom of these little sky islands.

Poster Typography

Task Review:

  • Can you discuss the techniques you have used in this session?

I have used the polygon tool to create my typography fonts. I have also used the move tool to adjust my fonts. I rasterize the font I used so that I could cut some of the writing I did using text tool so that I could create a cut effect. I also used transform to flip my font.

  • Could this task be useful as part of developing ideas as part of your project?

Explain why?

This task is only useful for developing ideas for typography for our posters it could be used to reflect what our movie is about and evoke a certain feeling from the viewer.

  • Do you feel your experiments where successful?

Explain why?

Yes I do believe they were successful as I accurately brought what I imagined into reality.
