Straight Back Down – Dean Lewis

I like how this composition builds up slightly during the first verse, then most of the instrumentation drops out within the first half of the pre-chorus, to then build back up again. I really enjoy how the dynamics change within this composition. They become louder during the chorus but subtly quieter during the verses.

Instrumentation

Verse – vocals and acoustic guitar, adds drums during second half

Pre-chorus – vocals, piano, adds in drums and ukulele during second half

Chorus – vocals, backing vocals, ukulele, drums, acoustic guitar, bass and synth

Verse 2 – vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, drums, synth, adds in backing vocals during and ukulele second half

Bridge – vocals, backing vocals, drums, acoustic guitar, ukulele, synth

Chorus breakdown – vocals and acoustic guitar, adds in ukulele

The texture of the piece changes quite often; it is thin during the verses and pre-chorus but is thick within the chorus.

One of my favourite parts within this composition is the break with just vocals before the final chorus. It works really well with this song.

The main melody is created through the vocals, but the synth within the chorus adds an extra melody, which makes the piece sound more interesting musically. Both melodies are quite simple, but very catchy.
