Live Performance Analysis

Venue

  • Ancienne Belgique
  • 2,000 capacity
  • Pop
  • The audience paid to see this specific artist
  • All of the audience attended in person

Communication

  • For the most part, Tom is facing his band
  • The video doesn’t show much of the band, so I don’t know how much they were communicating with one another. However, Tom seems to make some subtle gestures towards them such as nodding his head and smiling, so this may show that they are communicating with him and each other through their body language
  • He does communicate with the audience often, asking them to sing along. He turns around in his seat so he is facing them at some points too
  • At one point, he gestures to someone outside of the camera and points to his piano, so it is clear that he is able to clearly communicate with both his band and his team effectively using body language

Stage Presence

  • The lighting starts off quite subtle, with just a few spotlights on Tom and his piano
  • Once the band start to play/backing vocals are added, the lighting has some more motion, and there are lights on the band as well as Tom
  • The white and bright lighting is enhanced by the white curtains in the background
  • The staging set up seems to be quite simple from what I can see. This alongside the simple lighting (no different colours etc.) gives the impression that Tom wants his audience to focus more on the music that any other element of the show

Musical Competency

  • Tom performs the song no different to how it was recorded
  • The performance is well arranged and tight. There are little to no noticeable mistakes
  • Tom’s body language gives the impression that he is comfortable in this environment, showing that he has performed many times and is able to present a confident performance
  • The dynamics vary throughout the performance; louder within the choruses, quieter during verses and intro/outro
