My role: Event Manager
What is an event manager?
The event manager is responsible for the outcome/success of an event. This includes liaising with various personnel to plan venues etc for the event.
“The job of the event managers in concerts is to make sure that everything on location runs smoothly without any hitches. Concert Manager or event manager at Live concerts are required to ensure that the concert goes as originally planned. As a manager, he/she has to manage a wide range of activities like takes care and oversees the work of the different teams working on the production of the concert, including location, stage arranging and scheduling, venue supervising, concert rehearsals, recording and performances.” (Events Academy, 2017)
The Event Manager is responsible for the creation and development of the event and for managing the event and its outcomes from start to finish. The role includes devising the event concept, planning the logistics and coordinating the technical aspects before launching the event. (Office, n.d.)
What are my roles before the performance?
- Decide a time and place for the event
- Talk with promoters to create material for the event, and sharing posts on social media etc.
- Set up site for tickets
- Organise bands (i.e. who is playing, what are they playing, and band names)
- Get a list of equipment needed by each band/artist, hand this over to the stage manager
- Decide a running order for the bands, communicate this with them so they know to prepare
- Organise a mock performance for the event
- Organise a promotional photoshoot for the event
- Confirm running time and setlist, hand these over to the sound manager
What are my roles during the performance?
- To ensure that the bands know the running order and are prepared to go on stage. This may include some exercises to calm stage anxiety, or tips for performers when on stage
- If there are any changes during the performance, communicate these to the stage and sound managers as soon as possible
What are my roles after the performance?
- To reflect on the performance and my role within it, and evaluate what was successful and what may have been unsuccessful
