Putting the Piece Together (Band)

Snake Eyes 16/11/2021

Firstly, we rolled a dice to randomly choose the chords for each section, and then adjusted some until we found a chord progression that we liked. We then put together a very simple structure of intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus.

The chords we used for the verse were B minor, D major, A major and E minor for the first 4 bars, and then changed the E minor to a G major within the next 4 bars. For the chorus we chose D major, G major, E minor, G major.

We also came up with a simple melody using the pentatonic scale. It is all quite simple at the moment and there is a lot that can be adjusted/improved but I think we have a good foundation to build the rest of the song on.

Once we had the basics done, we started to look at some potential lyrics for the song. We all struggled massively with this and couldn’t think of anything to write lyrics about. Nic suggested that we should get an object and think of ways to describe it, or characteristics within the object that could be written about. The object we chose is a dice, since we came up with the chord progressions using a dice. However, even when we had an object, we still found it difficult to come up with lyrics. Oliver mentioned ‘Snake Eyes’ as it is a common phrase used in gambling with dice, so we used this as the title of the song.

We worked on the structure of the song a little bit more, and added in a bridge section. The chords used in this are B minor, A# diminished, F# minor and G major. For the keys, we just went up the pentatonic scale starting with B.

I think we need to improve on making sure we are all coming back in at the same time after the break.

Even though we have made quite a bit of progress with the song, there is still a lot of work to be done. However, I see a lot of potential in it and I am excited to hear the final outcome.

To break up the verse and chorus, we added a pre-chorus just using an A major chord. Lewis and Phoenix also worked on some lyrics around the title ‘Snake Eyes’.

It has been a while since we played the song together as a band, since we paused this project for the Live Wire at Christmas performance, so it took us a couple of run throughs to recap where we had gotten up to so that we were ready to progress to the next parts.

This was our final rehearsal of the song before moving onto the recording and mixing part of the process. We spent a lot of this session going over the song so that we knew when to come in after the break, as when we did a practice recording, we were very out of time.
