During this project I have learned a lot about composition. When we started it I didn’t think I would have much to learn because I had previous experience with using Sibelius to create scores. However, I was wrong. I have learned how to use a new program: Logic Pro X. I did not know that there were things such as a pitch shifter and now I know how to use it.
I am now able to write songs which I struggled with before coming onto this course. This makes me happy because I think that song writing is a good way to destress and get your thoughts out. I also find it to be a great skill to have always wanted to be able to do it but I have never known where to start. Due to this skill, my group managed to write two songs for our ensemble composition and I am proud of both of them.
Thanks to everything that I have learned from this project, I have successfully created 3 compositions using 3 different methods and have a much better understanding of the music industry. I am now also more aware of things such as copyright law within the industry and know even more about music history. I think that learning all of this has been important because it gives me a better understanding of how music is made and how much time and effort goes into it.
I think this was an overall good piece of work because I created 4 successful compositions (2 ensemble compositions), all of which fit their brief. I would improve on them by taking more time to research the genres and take that into account whilst composing.
This project links well with the first one because it touched on my knowledge of live sound and performance. Especially during the showcase when we performed our ensemble compositions in front of an audience.
At the start of this project I gave myself some targets. Firstly, I aimed to analyse and compose 3 songs. I have completed this, analysing 3 different types of songs in detail and briefly analysing another 10. Secondly, I wanted to learn how to write lyrics. I feel as though this has been another successfully met target as I wrote the majority of the lyrics for our ensemble composition song (confusion) and also wrote some lyrics of my own that I might even turn into a song later. Finally, I wanted to gain skills in Logic. I think that this was also met to a good standard as I now have an at least basic knowledge of how to use this software and feel quite confident when using it.
