Performance Evaluation

Lunchtime Gig:

Evaluation:

I think that this gig went fairly well. First of all, I played the piano during Hungry Heart. This was a very important part because it is a main instrument. I played this well with almost no mistakes. However next time I will spend 15 minutes a day on each song to make sure that I know the song perfectly and can play with absolutely no mistakes.

Secondly, I sang backing vocals with Barbora to Human. This was very successful on my part because I did not make any mistakes and harmonised quite well with Barbora. However, she did not always get the correct timings. Next time, I will make sure to spend more time with her to help her and that will make our performance better.

After that, we sang a duet to Marry You. This was good but Barbora sang the wrong lyrics but she managed to recover well. This was slightly frustrating for both of us as we knew this song very well and it should not have happened. In order to prevent this for next time, I will make sure to read the lyrics and listen to the song a lot so that I do not make the same mistake.

Next came Feeling Good. I was very unhappy with my performance during this song for many reasons. Firstly, the opening chord was played wrong and this set us up badly. It threw everyone off and made me lose confidence. After I had managed to regain some confidence, I heard someone else in the band make a mistake. This confused me and a lot of others, making me miss my cue for the piano solo. I think that by the time that we had finished playing this song, we just seemed unprofessional because we were all either frustrated with each other or were laughing. By the time I perform another gig, I will make sure that I work on my professionalism when I make mistakes.

Then we played Chocolate. I was the lead vocalist for this song and I really enjoyed this. The reason for that is that this song is one of my favourites and it was one that I could just relax and have fun with. I believe that if I had relaxed and enjoyed all of the songs in this same way that I may have made less mistakes. This however does not mean that it was perfect. In fact I messed up part of the first verse but it was not very noticeable.

After that, I returned to the piano to play Love is a Losing Game. I liked this song because the chord progression is simple and hardly changes throughout the song so I did not make any mistakes.

Penultimately, we played Sunday Morning. I also liked playing this one because the chords were simple again but also because of the bass line in the bridge that I got to play along with. This went really well and showcased good communication with the other band members because we were in time and played perfectly.

Finally, we ended on No Woman No Cry. This was very different due to its genre. I found this one difficult during rehearsals and often had to ask for help but during the gig I played my riff well and did not make any mistakes.

SMART Targets:

For my next project I will…

  • Practice for at least 15 minutes to an hour every day to prevent making mistakes.
  • Spend at least 30 minutes helping other performers to work better with me in both performance and communication.
  • Spend additional time on top of that perfecting harmonies with other vocalists.
  • Practice my stage presence by doing mini performances for example performing in the café to improve my stage presence and professionalism.
