Initial Email to SORM (02/03/2020):
Today, I sent an email to SORM to ask about the possibility of working with them to deliver a workshop.
Hi,
We are wondering if we could come to your music centre, to deliver a workshop. We are level 3 music students at bradford college, who are doing our final project and we would love it if we could carry out our songwriting workshop with you.
Thanks, Carys and Hareth
please contact us with details.
They replied very quickly with a phone number and told us to call them to discuss further.
Phone call with SORM (03/03/2020):
Following the message I sent to SORM enquiring if we could deliver a workshop in their building with their clients, I spoke to Duane, who helped us to organise the perfect setting and timescale that we needed. He also told us to meet him at SORM to discuss the details further and take a look around.
Visit to SORM (04/03/2020):
Upon arrival at SORM, Duane met us and showed us around. We went to the classroom where the workshop will be held and in the room there were 2 drum kits, a piano, microphones, space for tables and a whiteboard for PowerPoints. This is perfect for us as it enables me to teach harmony, melody and lyrics easily and Hareth can teach rhythms all by using the instruments that we are comfortable with. It also lets us record with ease.
We were also told about the clients we would be delivering the workshop to. These people are predominantly adults with autism or other learning difficulties and disabilities. Duane asked if due to their low immune systems missing a session could effect them in any way I explained that even if the clients were only able to attend one session, they would still benefit from what we taught them and because they would work in groups to produce an end product as long as they had knowledge about one area of songwriting they would be able o help others who may not understand that aspect well.
During the final part of our meeting, we discussed the best day to hold the workshop. We agreed that Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 was an ideal time because not only does that fit in with our college timetable but it is also when the majority of SORM’s clientele are there. We agreed to go on 21/04/2020, 28/04/2020 and 05/05/2020 and deliver 3 one hour workshops. However this is flexible and if we need to take more time to explain things or answer questions, we are more than welcome to do so.
Email sent to SORM (13/03/2020):
Hi Duane,
I am just emailing you to ask if you received Hareth's message as he has not had a reply.
We were unsure of a way to contact you so I hope that this is the best way. If not, please can you give us a better way of contacting you.
Additionally, I would like to follow up on the email and ask if you will be able to provide paper and pens. Please can you let us know.
As well as this, we would love it if you could provide us with a copy of your permission slip for photos so that we can reference it on our digital space websites.
Finally, although it is unlikely, I just want to check that if we need to push the workshops back by one week that this would be okay.
Kind regards,
Carys Marshall
I sent this email after not receiving a reply to the email Hareth sent and I also had a few more questions to ask as you can see above. However this was also left without reply.
Conversation with Hareth about how we go forward (17/03/2020):
After talking to my tutors today, we came to the conclusion that college may be closed at any moment. This meant I had to start thinking about what I would do if that were to happen. Hareth however did not attend today because he is self-isolating. I contacted him to explain the situaion and I reasoned with him about why his ideas to songwrite and record were completely out of the question – we simply would not have the resources. I told him that John and Nic had suggested a video documenting what we would have done if we had the facilities to do so. After that, we agreed that we would no longer work on the project together as it seemed like an impossibility.
Phone call with SORM (19/03/2020):
I decided to call SORM today after still having no response or contact with them over email and also due to the changes that have occured due to Covid-19. I explained who I was and why my previous plans to deliver the workshop had changed. The member of staff I spoke to was very understanding and thanked me for letting them know that I would have to cancel. Once I had ended the call, I informed Hareth that I cancelled the workshops so that we no longer had anything to worry about.
Phone call with Nic (23/03/2020):
I decided to speak to my tutor Nic to discuss a few options for me to change my project. We discussed the possibility of delivering a workshop over video call, which could be good but very difficult to organise. Another idea we came up with was videoing myself delivering the same workshop, a vocal workshop or one adapted to my new audience. This means that I need to come up with an audience and then work on the workshop after that.
