During this recording session Michael, James, Amelia and I were performing our instrumental track (Horizons) with Hareth and Alfie as the recording engineers. Personally, I think it went very well because we got 8 takes in total with half of them being very usable.
The problems we faced were fairly minimal, the main one being the kick drum’s mic placement. It was directed towards the towel inside of it rather than the inside head so the sound was very muffled. This was not rectified up until the final take so that was automatically dubbed the most successful recording.
However, we also had issues with feedback and signal loss in the headphones. This meant that we were finding it difficult to hear ourselves when playing, which led to mistakes. Thankfully, Lewis (our tutor) managed to fix these issues and got us back on track.
After the final take was completed, we decided to overdub the guitars as they had been recorded through DI originally but we knew that they would sound much better through their amps. This went smoothly and other than a few timing issues it did not take long at all.
Looking back, I think that this was a very successful session and am quite pleased with the turn out. Each party (both recording engineers and artists) were respectful towards each other and there was limited stress.
