Above is a mind map of all of the possible topics to write about.
First of all, I chose songwriting because this is something I am interested in and like to do myself. I also heard that songwriting is something that can help a lot of people into a career in music. I thought this was a good idea but in the end, I decided that there may be a limited amount of research to do on it and could be difficult to talk about. Especially since I already carried out a lot of research on this topic in past projects.
Secondly, I thought that concerts may be an intriguing subject but came to the same conclusion that there are limited things to look at.
Next, I thought that Ariana Grande was an interesting artist to look at. She has been through a lot of traumatic experiences and has focused on those to create a lot of successful music. These also lead to a concert that brought together people and artists from across the country to celebrate the lives of the ’22 angels’. This is one of my more promising ideas.
After, I thought I could write about the Covid-19 Virus and it’s effect on the music industry as this is a recent event. It is however something that does not particularly interest me. If anything it annoys me as it has become an ‘inconvenience’ and caused me a lot of stress. An event I really would not like to think about or look into any more than is necessary.
Then, I started to think about siblings Billie Eilish and FINNEAS as they have changed the way a lot of people look at music and have impressed me with their talents. Both are young and inexperienced, coming from a poor family. I love their music and thought it could be extremely exciting to research further into their rise to fame and how they cope at such a young age.Though this topic is very specific and it narrows the chance to explore things in detail. I also see this as something I only want to look into because I am a fan of their music. So unfortunately, I had to add this one to my ‘no pile’.
After that, I remembered my interest in live sound. This is a section of the music industry that greatly interests me purely because of the amount of work that goes into it. I would like to look into an apprenticeship in this area as a possible career starter but I know that looking into it for this project would not be feasible as I feel like I would run out of things to talk about even if I combined it with the health and safety aspects and case studies.
Finally, the last idea I had was Social Media and how it plays a big part in music. I have noticed that recently the popularity of social media continues to increase and it is not uncommon for songs and artists to become famous just because they were shared on social media. Whether that be as the backing track to a dance trend or a meme, it is extremely normal for music to earn its popularity on the internet. This would mean that there are lots of different subtopics that I could discuss and delve into. This meant I had two choices. I could research Ariana Grande and her life or Social Media. I have decided to use Social Media as the topic for this research project as I see a lot more potential in it and look forward to learning about it.
