What is jump cutting

Jump cutting

A jump cut is a cut in a film editing in which a single continuous sequential shot of a subject is broken into two parts, which is rendered to make an effect of jumping forward in time.

This filming technique was discovered in 1908 by a man called Georges Méliès by accident and he used it to simulate magic tricks

Notable examples- information from

the jump cut has sometimes served a political use in film. It has been used as an alienating Brechtian technique (the Verfremdungseffekt) that makes the audience aware of the unreality of the film experience, in order to focus the audience’s attention on the political message of a film rather than the drama or emotion of the narrative—as may be observed in some segments of Sergei Eisenstein’s The Battleship Potemkin. (wiki, 2020)

How jump cuts are used.

  1. In a montage
  2. To amplify tension
  3. When introducing characters

How we use jump cuts today

While you can still see jump cuts in films every so often, the technique has seen an explosion of popularity on the internet. Largely popularized by vloggers and YouTubers, it is almost a guarantee that you’ll see jump cut examples in the best YouTube channels.

Jump cuts in vlogs have become so ubiquitous, you probably don’t even notice them anymore. Here’s a quick explanation of how this type of editing works in vlogs and the 4 strategies you can use to master them.

Mach cutting

mach cutting is any translation of audio or visual, that uses the elements of the previous scene to fluidly bring the viewer through to the next scene. They also have the ability to do so with both impact, and subtext. They differ from regular cuts because they provide a thematic connection between two separate events or concepts.

Different types of mach cuts.

  1. Graphic Match Cuts — shapes, colours, compositions
  2. Match on Action Cuts — action, movement
  3. Sound Bridge — sound effects, dialogue, music

Cross cutting

Cross cutting is a way of filming and editing mostly used in action seance, cross cut happens when two different seance are filmed sparely and made too look like its happening at same time when in reality its just an a illusion of editing to build tension

Research about cross cutting.

what is cross cutting, In film editing, crosscutting describes the video editing technique of switching back and forth between scenes, often giving the impression that the action occurring in different locations is unfolding at the same moment. Also known as parallel editing, this technique dates back to director Edwin S. Porter’s The Great Train Robbery of 1903.

Cross cutting in film is an editing technique that cuts separate actions together to illustrate moments that take place simultaneously within the narrative structure. The “rules” of cross cutting as far as their relation to scale and time are not overly strict, but the majority of cross cuts are used to show large scale events that occur across multiple locations.(Lannom, 2021)

Cross cutting is used to cut between two different actions happening at the same time. By cutting back and forth between these different events, the director can establish that they are somehow linked. For example, in the film Jaws (1975) the director cross-cuts between point of view shots of the killer shark moving beneath the waves and shots of swimmers splashing above the waves. By cutting back and forth between the two locations audiences soon get the impression that a shark attack is imminent.(Editing – GCSE Moving Image Arts (CCEA) Revision – BBC Bitesize, 2021)

When should you crosscut?

To capture phone or video conversations.
Filmmakers often use the crosscut to show two characters talking on the phone. The camera cuts back and forth as the conversation progresses and there’s room to play with dialogue and its relation to the action in the frame. For example, in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ferris pretends to be bedridden while talking to his father on the phone, but really he’s sitting at his computer, pressuring his buddy Cameron to come round.(Holtz and Kavanaugh, 2021)

Sadly i didn’t have much time to research about following action so my group used the information our teacher told us in the lesson, following action is pretty basic it’s when in a movie the focus isn’t on the character but on a thing for example id there’s a scene of someone buying thing in a shop the camera will focus on the things the character is picking up and the shopping basket. that’s a simple explanation of following action but i think it explains how it works. The thing is the focus not the character

Music video

i chose a song by a fictional band called samurai that exists in the game cyberpunk 2077, the song is called
Never Fade Away. its a rock song so i have to think about how to make a good video for it, but i already have some ideas on how to film a decant video.

The song i’ll be using

Lyrics

[Intro]
We lost everything
We had to pay the price
Yeah we lost everything
We had to pay the price

[Verse 1]
I saw in you what life was missing
You lit a flame that consumed my hate
I’m not one for reminiscing but
I’d trade it all for your sweet embrace

[Post-Verse]
Yeah
Cause we lost everything
We had to pay the price

[Verse 2]
There’s a canvas with two faces
Of fallen angels who loved and lost
It was a passion for the ages
And in the end guess we paid the cost

[Bridge]
A thing of beauty — I know
Will never fade away
What you did to me — I know
Said what you had to say
But a thing of beauty
[Chorus]
Will never fade away
Will never fade away
Will never fade away

[Verse 3]
I see your eyes, i know you see me
You’re like a ghost how you’re everywhere
I am your demon never leaving
A metal soul of rage and fear

[Post-Verse]
That one thing that changed it all
That one sin that caused the fall

[Bridge]
A thing of beauty — I know
Will never fade away
What you did to me — I know
Said what you had to say
But a thing of beauty — I know
Will never fade away
And I’ll do my duty — I know
Somehow I’ll find a way
But a thing of beauty
Will never fade away
And I’ll do my duty

This is my music video sadly some of the footage was lost that is why i have some weird cuts threw out the video because i had to use the things i had because we couldn’t re-shoot the the footage i was missing but i did my best sadly we didn’t have much time with my video to record because we had a group and everyone had to do there own video so we helped each other and sadly one took a lot of time to film, and we were extremely tired by the time of filming this but we did our best, i tried to make a following action cut doesn’t look good but it kinda looks like it so i hope it counts.
