Tutor feedback:

Mock interview – add a quick reflection underneath. Feedback here:

You introduced yourself well, including where you were from, which was effective. You presented yourself way and showed positive body language throughout which was engaging.

You gave some good examples and it was good to hear how you were calm under pressure, and the athletic side of things helped here. The football team example worked well and showed how you are a team player. Doing some work experience or taking professional opportunities would help to give you more examples to use.

You talked about how you weren’t great at written communication, which was a big part of the job description. Try to look at ways in which you might work around this, such as using technology to help support you in this area.

For your question, you asked when you start the job. This was really presumptuous and didn’t come across well. Try to be confident but avoid being arrogant as it wouldn’t help get the role.

Main feedback – work on developing a question for the panel and avoid coming across as arrogant or presumptuous. Try to get more experience to give you more examples to rely on in the interview. Think about how you might be able to turn your weakness into a positive.

Career pitch – same.

You pitched a career as a lighting technician and this worked well. You based this on previous experience and this was good. You presented this well and were quite confident in your knowledge. Make sure you reference the PowerPoint as this would help to show where you found the information. You talked about how to establish your career and this worked well. More on networking and how you’d get known here would be good. Look at local companies and venues.

Dollars – not pounds? Update this. This seemed like a lot.

You might need to think about other roles or combining light and sound at the start.

Getting started – getting to know people. Getting a mentor. Some help. This is essential. Explore this more.

Small venues closing. How would you deal with this?

Reflection:

A few things were brought up that I had no idea I was doing well, like body language and making interviewers feel at ease. I will definitely try to improve these areas. Moreover, I should have looked into ways to improve my written communication skills prior to the interview so that I would have been ready for the question rather than ignoring it. I joked around knowing there was no job in the room with our department head and my tutor, which I didn’t realise would be taken seriously, but I won’t be doing it again. I’ll investigate the organisation and the job role in advance of any future interviews so that I may prepare my own questions for the interviewers. In order to get more experience and be able to provide more instances during the interview, I will also think about volunteering more. Regarding my potential future study paths I’ve made the decision to continue at Bradford College to level 6 in order to gain more knowledge about the field, consider my alternatives for the future, and finish my degree, which will undoubtedly improve my resume and enable me to work in the music industry.
