Mixing

Firstly I bounced the track the way it was recorded so I can track my progress. I cleaned it up, took the quiet parts out. After that I grouped them into busses and changed their colors so it’d be easy to recognise where what is.

After all that I worked on the noise gates to cancel out the sounds I don’t want and just to make it sound clearer. I used noise gate just on the kick drum and the snare. I turned the noise gate to 0 dB’s and slowly worked my way up listening to the sounds I need. Once I got that i left it at that and started looking at the Hold and Release so i’d get the full sound.

I worked on my mixing techniques today. I played around with the frequencies and panning and ended with  very clean and soft sound exactly like I wanted. After that I worked on the levels and balanced everything out. It took me a while to find the right balance but I worked it out. I had some trouble with the vocals so i copied in new ones and i came up with an idea for my vocals.

I worked on reverb and compression today.  I added some reverb to vocals, It took me a while to find the sound i wanted to because there were so many to choose from and I couldn’t find the right balance between wet and dry and length and size of the reverb.

I also added some compression to the drums, bass and vocals. It took me a while to understand how compression works and what a huge difference it can make. After adding some compression to my track it started sound quite bright before it was quite dull.

After adding compression to my track I still felt like my mix sounded a bit dull so i started tweaking with the EQ which made a ver prominent difference to my track. I had to focus on the vocals because when i was working on the reverb I messed up a bit because I got lost in different effects present in the software but I managed to recover. It sounded a bit quiet so i had to tweak the EQ’s.

After working on the EQ’s I decided to add some effects. It took me a while to find the right effects because Barbora’s voice is great so she doesn’t really need effects so I made a decision of not adding any crazy effects and keep it simple with just the tape delay.

After I was done mixing, I like to add natural sounds to my production work so I added some rain sounds to top it all off.
