This is the first version of our recording of the cover we are doing, Revenge. This version has little to no effects on any of the instruments. we first recorded it on the 19th of April 2018 in a small recording room at college. We approached this recording with the idea of been as acoustic as possible. I started with the drums firstly.
The drums are very basic in the original version of this track. So figuring out the drum pattern for our version wasn’t very hard. The original version has a standard kick drum and a standard rim shot so this is what i used for our cover. On the first beat of the bar you hear the kick drum and then on the third beat you will hear the rim shot.
after laying out the basic drum pattern I moved onto the guitar. The guitar part was also very easy because I already knew how to play it so I just drew the guitar parts in on a piano roll. The guitar part is a simple 4 chord arpeggiated loop. Once the guitar was drawn in I started on the bass part.
The bass in this song is probably my favourite part of the track. The bass rides with the bass note of the guitar every time it hits. this amplifies the bass note of the guitar very well.
Once the instrumental was made we started recording vocals. recording vocals wasn’t the easiest of tasks because I encountered issues such as adjusting the gain levels properly. As well as this, the room we were recording in is very small and warm so there were instances where the artist would get very uncomfortable, thus resulting in poorer performances and recordings.
I believe the first version of our recording isn’t very well produced. Firstly, the gain levels were not set correctly and so on the computer screen the sound waves were not large at all. In result of this, The vocals were not very nice sounding (bad audio quality) and needed turning up. For our next recording session I would make sure that the levels were set correctly.
This is the first version of our original track that we recorded. With this track we wanted a love song type of vibe which is why we have pianos and strings in the track. I didn’t make the whole instrumental for this track, only the drum pattern. so as far as composing the track I have very little to say.
For the recording process of this song I spent a lot of time recording harmonies. The harmonies were difficult at times because the vocalist in my group would sometimes forget that she had to sing with the same volume as the previous harmonies and so to get the volume correct I would have to automate the harmonies. This is frustrating because when I eventually got all the automation correct there were often times when the vocalist would say things like “That harmony shouldn’t be that loud.” or “I don’t like that fade in.” This was frustrating because it meant I would have to go back and re-automate the whole selected track on Logic.
I don’t like this mix very much because some instruments are too loud as well as some vocals been too quiet.
On both tracks I used similar plug ins and effects on the master track. I used compression and reverb to give the track a more “stuck together” feeling so that the vocals didn’t sound too separated from the instrumental. I used things such as tape delay and voice transformer on harmonies to give them a backing vocal feel, adlib if you will.
