Creating the artwork for our EP was a collaborative process with a graphic design student named Baldev Raaj.
This was the first email I sent to Nic, my tutor, who was organising the collaborations. Below is a rough idea of what we wanted our album art to be like (drawn by our lead singer, Sonny). The mascot of the band is already an octopus, so we wanted to incorporate one into the album art. We also wanted a grand sense of scale in the artwork since the EP is called colossal.
We drew a lot of inspiration for our artwork from Muse’s album ‘resistance’ which is pictured below
You can probably see the similarities, we wanted to take the sense of scale from this concept but with a lot less colour to fit our style of music.
These are the first four ideas Baldev sent to me, which I then forwarded to the band so that we could discuss them:
This is our band group chat which I sent the designs to. We agreed to go for a certain design but to have our name as ‘the obscurities’ instead of just ‘obscurities’
This is the final product that we got.
We were all happy with it and pleased that Baldev stayed very close to our original concepts. I especially like the shadow being the man because it really shows off the sense of scale that we were after.
However, if we had the chance to change some things about the design, we would have it as a digital image instead of a hand drawing to make it look more professional. If we were to do this project again and need some more artwork, we would seek out somebody that would be able to convert the drawing into a digital image to make it more crisp and professional looking.
