Event Management Research

Event management is project management in practice for events such as concerts, parties, festivals etc.

My first idea for the gig was to raise money, specifically for our music course. I believed that this was a good idea because it would give our course some extra desperately needed funding, and also give us a sense of what it would be like to put on an event and make a profit. However, after discussing this with the other students, we came to the conclusion that we would hold the concert in memory of a recently lost friend of one of the students. We decided that this would be a good idea as the money we make would be going to a noble cause and to help somebody out instead of for personal gain.

My role for event management is digital promotion. This means that I am in charge of everything that happens online for the gig. My responsibilities include setting up pages online, sending out links to get tickets for the event and handle social media.

In my role, I expect to collaborate with Ant Henderson who is also doing digital promotion, this will make it easier for both of us as the workload could be split between two people. I also expect to collaborate with Cain Watson and Leah Smith who are the stage managers and will be overseeing the entire actual gig.

One of the biggest platforms for digital promotion is Facebook. This website is very user-friendly therefore will be easy to spread the word about the concert. Another useful aspect of this website is that generally speaking, all of our target audience (which is mainly family and friends) are on it and are therefore able to get information about our concert. Also, Facebook is free. This is where I will be focusing the bulk of my attention for digital promotion.

Some potential problems that I might run into are:

Protection of the students – this could be solved by getting the consent of each student to put some of their info and pictures online purely for promotional purposes.

No one showing up to the gig – This can be solved by ensuring each student tells at least their family and to market it as a college event to make people more likely to attend.

someone getting hurt during the gig (health and safety) – This can be solved by running through all the health and safety drills of any gig. Such as taping down cables, having equipment PAT tested, and holding the event at a venue with insurance.
