Final Performance Reflection

Above you can see the footage from our final gig, which went a lot better than the mock but still had some aspects that we could have improved.

One of our strengths was the overall tightness of the music. Everyone came in on time and we managed to stay together well throughout. When I was counting in or leading in the band, I kept a steady tempo and displayed good musical communication to make sure the rest of the band knew where to come in, like for the introduction for ‘Superstition’ I grow in dynamics and open my hi hat towards the end to signal that we’re going into the verse of the song. Another strength was dynamics. I, as well as the rest of the band, displayed very good dynamics to contrast the different sections, especially the verses and choruses.

Some weaknesses of the performance were some timing issues. For superstition, I noticed that I had started the song way too fast. this could’ve been down to the adrenaline of playing in front of a crowd, luckily the rest of the band adapted and played it faster with me. I can fix this for the next time we perform by practicing the song to the actual Stevie Wonder version to get more used to the regular tempo. Another weakness of the performance was our stage presence. We stayed relatively stationary on stage and although we danced around a bit we should’ve looked like we were enjoying the music more. We can fix this by practicing in a setup that is similar to that of a performance scenario and filming ourselves to see how we could have a more captivating stage presence.

Overall, I think that this was a successful performance as our weaknesses were only small aspects of the performance and they can easily be improved. Also, it was obvious by the reaction of the crowd that they enjoyed our performance, which is another reason that I count this as a success.
