Vocal Recording Process

The second half of the second day was spent recording the vocals. This was the easiest to record out of all the instruments and took the least amount of time. All we needed for this process was a microphone and a sound cancellation shield around it.  See the gear tab for more details on these.

When we were soundchecking the vocals, we noticed that there was a faint hum coming from the microphone. We thought that it was. because we were using a condenser microphone with the gain set at a strange level because of Sonny’s vocal style. To start the troubleshooting, we swapped the mic out for a dynamic vocal mic and that fixed the problem instantly. After we solved that, we could get straight onto tracking the vocals. One of the reasons that this was the most simple process is that we didn’t need to do any overdubs or multi-tracking. As a band, we decided that we wanted a raw vocal sound for the EP. We didn’t want it saturated with reverb and we didn’t want much reverb or effects. Therefore, we were done with vocal tracking in about an hour. This was the most successful part of recording as it was so quick and effective. We knew exactly what we wanted from the vocals and there was nothing that needed to be changed last minute, apart from the microphone.
