City of culture summary:

The city of culture award was first created at the start of January 2009 by culture secretary Andy Bunham who is now Mayor of greater Manchester. According to an article published in Business live “The idea for the award was to allow the winning city to then host live events such as the brit awards, turner prize and other such award ceremonies in the same article its stated that Sir Philip Redmond creator of shows like Hollyoaks also helped create the award”.

The city of culture is awarded to a city to encourage culture to help regenerate a city. However, a city cannot just put a bid in an attempt to become city of

culture a publishing document from the government from 2021 states “The bidding city must have strong leadership, demonstrate culture, be affordable and deliverable as well as a lasting economic and social regeneration on the area”. If the successful city achieves the city of culture title the awarding city will then have the title of city for a calendar year during this time the city will then hold festivals celebrating its local diversity and culture.

In addition to this, the city of Bradford was awarded the title of city of culture by the then secretary for digital, culture, and sport Nadine Dorris who was part of a panel of experts who looked through the criteria as explained above. What do Bradford receive for the title of city of culture? According to the government website “Bradford will receive an initial £275.000 funding to ensure the city can start developing its plans for 2025”. Bradford had to bid alongside Wrexham, and county Durham who were all runners up during the bidding all these bidders then received a grant of £125,000 to assist in securing the city of culture title next year.

Target audience pitch:

How I would pitch my idea to my target audience is using social media this is because my target audience will be young adults 18+ with an aspiration for film making or film make as a hobby. The social media platforms I will use include tik tok, YouTube, as well as Instagram to bring passionate film makers from Bradford as well as from the international stage to showcase their work. In addition to this, to target my target audience I will showcase work from film makers and directors from Bradford to encourage aspiring film makers to show their work to people who may have travelled from another country to see the work that has been produced by local film makers.

This will also help the city develop as media capital of the north that will surpass Manchester as media city as well as bring even more investment into the economy.
