A foley artist is a person who creates sounds for films, videos and other visuals. In post production. Foley artists can sometimes use objects to create sounds such as doors, pens, footsteps, books (ect). The word ‘Foley’ comes from Jack Foley in 1891-1967 he was a sound effect pioneer. (Maio, 2020)

The process behind being a foley artist is long for example. If they want to get sound for footsteps they will spend hours as there are a lot of variables such as what shoe to be wearing as this will affect the sound. Also what surface the person with the shoe will be walking on. (Snow, wood, concrete, sand). On top of all that recording they have to edit the sounds. Which can be a lengthy process as they need to figure out what effects will be best for each sound. Then they will need to synchronise the sound to the movie/video. Now a movie is 1hour and 30minutes long on average imagine how long it would take to sync sound too long footage like that.

To produce some robot sounds you can use some of these effects comb filter, pitch correction. The comb filter will give your audio a metallic sound which will give it more of a robot feel. With pitch correction you can adjust how high or low the tone is. With a low tone and a slowed down sound. That will give it more of a robotic sound. (primeloop, 2020)

Some foley artist have used clever props such as bacon. Bacon can be used to sound like rain. As in film it will be hard to capture rain. It could be sunny where you live and hardly rain. So this is a very good idea. It has also been put to the test. People will hear the sound of bacon being fried and not know its bacon They think its rain. (Stearn, 2020)

Without foley a video/movie will sound empty. Viewers wouldn’t be immersed into the movie. We now have 7.1 surround sound to really immerse viewers to make them feel like they are there. Foley can enhance scenes such as fighting scenes by adding in punching sounds, falling sounds (ect). (Sound Ideas, 2020)

Another example of foley is sound for breaking bones. You cannot break a persons bones just for sound. So some foley artists have found a way to make audio just like the sound of breaking bones. They accomplish this by breaking the stalk of celery or head of a lettuce. (Maher, 2020)
