Experiment- Jump Cuts

Research objective: I will be researching what a jump cut is. Then i will try to use it in a dramatic film. I hope to fully understand what a jump cut is. I also want to be able to use it effectively.

Theory:A jump cut is one shot that has been split into two. A jump cut is different to an ordinary cut. As a jump cut portrays a seamless skip in time. A jump cut can be used in many ways such as in a montage, to increase tension, when introducing new characters or in documentary interviews. The Jump cut has been around since film started. (1895) (Bedard,2020).

Research Design: I plan to implement this as a flash back in my dramatic film. To give the viewer context and more information. About a certain character and why they chose to take those actions.

Experiment – Match cut

What is a match cut?: A match cut could be a visual match or a sound match this means that they use the same elements of the scene prior. A visual match could be setting a tripod in the same position. A sound match could be using the same audio while transitioning. (Dunham,2020)(Brook,2020).

Reflection:

In this task we had to film an example of cross cutting. So my group and I filmed a short video showcasing cross cutting. We decided to make our video about a hacking thief that hacks into a computer then a guard comes to check if everything is secure and he see’s nobody in that room.

Looking back on this project. We should’ve got more shots one example of this is when Nasim opened the door. We should’ve got a wide shot of the room to emphasise that the hacker disappeared. Also I would’ve liked to use audio in this video but there was too much noise in the background which caused me to mute the track.

In the editing process I used premier pro to make cuts and add colour correction. I got feedback from my teacher about how it should’ve cut a couple frames later for a smoother transition.

Doing this task I have learnt to plan more instead of jumping into it. We should’ve planned what shots to get. Also I have learnt to get more shots so we have more to work with in the edit. I now have a better understanding of filming process.
