Whilst working on ‘I Feel It Coming’ The Weeknd heard “some sort of feedback, sort of drum loop” every time Thomas, one of the producers, asked for another take. Being intrigued into what it was he heard, he went to find out what it was, only to find they had made a drum loop that The Weeknd really liked, in fact after 30 minutes of writing to the drum loop, they had written ‘Starboy’, arguably one of The Weeknd’s biggest hits.

Whilst reading this article, I took from it two things. One was that some songwriters just need the correct inspiration, and the right environment to really grasp their full potential, as I could tell with The Weeknd, he really seemed to fit Daft Punk’s laid back and retro style, aswell as their creative process, putting him in the right environment, and the inspiration was the drum loop which was the basis of ‘Starboy’. The second thing I took from this was that, even though it was just a small idea that hadn’t even been fleshed out at all yet, it was still the biggest songwriting inspiration of the entire session. So in the future I will need to make sure provide the correct environment for Lea whilst songwriting to help her feel comfortable in her creative process, I will also begin to share my smaller, less fleshed out ideas with Lea and see what she thinks of each one, to find out if she has any inspiration with any of my ideas.
