Composition 3: Research

For this composition, we researched some instrumental bands. We did this because instrumental bands create music that have no vocals, and therefore, if they were used, or created for, a sync with a video like ours, it would have much more detail than the minimalist compositions, yet it would still draw less focus that our ensemble pieces would, and therefore, they are the ideal type of composition that would be used.

One of the instrumental bands we looked at was Explosions in the Sky, they are band consists mostly of guitar players and a drummer. All though they do not have a very wide instrumentation, they use their instruments incredibly well and create an amazing sound bed that isn’t so much ambient like my sonnet composition, but still doesn’t draw too much focus like our ensemble compositions would.

Another band we looked at was Sigur Ros, whilst they aren’t exactly an instrumental band, they have a very clever us of their vocals, because they don’t use real language at all, instead they use a made up language they call ‘Volenska’, or ‘Hopelandic’. This means that they can still use the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, etc, techniques that vocals can offer, whilst still not drawing away from the rest of the composition. This means that it would be ideal to be used in a situation like this, and in fact it was used on BBC’s Blue Planet in this exact kind of situation with great success, as it became Sigur Ros’ most successful song ever, reaching number 24 in the UK charts.
