Personal Development

At the beginning of this project, I created a mind map of different skills and qualities that I should be developing, whether its as a musician, or just in how I approach work and life in general. These are all things that I should be developing now, and for the rest of my life.

My Weaknesses:

  • I regularly find my self very behind when it comes to my coursework, or other written work in general, as I never bother to take notes or write up about what I’ve done as, or not long after, I do it. This causes me to forget lots about what I’ve actually done, and what I’ve learnt during it. If I was to take notes whilst doing a task, and then write about it as soon as I get the chance, then I wouldn’t end up sitting and attempting to type everything up in one night at a mediocre quality.
  • I find my self very un-disciplined, whether its the way I approach my college work or most things, even down to my use of language. If I was to be much more controlled, sensible and focused on what I’m doing, then I believe that I could much more efficient in the way I do things.
  • My time management and organisation is notoriously poor, so much so that I actually ended up having a disciplinary meeting at college due to my low attendance. I know now that being where I’m supposed to be on time, or, better yet, early, is incredibly important, just as important as coming prepared with the right equipment and being organised in general is. This could be easily remedied by having a set out schedule with a day to day task list, some thing I’m attempting to use throughout this project.

Strengths:

  • I believe that I have a strong use of technology and I am easily able to use technology to my aid. This means that I could use technology to help me with some of my weaknesses, for example setting up a digital schedule that sends me notifications of when I need to do certain tasks, or using something like google drive on my phone to take notes and later elaborate on them without having to save or transfer files across devices because its all in the cloud.
  • I believe that my presentation, when it comes to my written work and the way it is laid out, is neat and almost professional, this is useful to me as it means that I can use this skill to help me keep organised and use my want for neat looking written work to set up a neat and simple to follow, for me at least, schedule. I also use this whilst I am producing in Ableton live, I have to name and colour each track and have them laid out correctly so that I know what is what as I am working on it. This goes for all the different effects and buses, etcetera. I believe this helps me keep my workflow up as I am producing and helps me keep things to a much more professional standard.
  • I also believe that I am a perfectionist when it comes to producing and I spend a lot of time tweaking and trying to get my songs to sound the way I want them to. This is a benefit and a negative as it helps me produce to a higher standard, but I also find myself getting lost in tweaking the little bits here and there until either; I’ve lost the original idea I was going for, or I just don’t finish the track at all because I’ve had another idea for another song or project to work on and because I didn’t finish tweaking the parts I’ve left it to work on the next thing.

I will use my strengths to try and help me transform my weaknesses into things I can call strengths and skills, whilst also developing those strengths and skills I already have to begin with, and developing as a producer, musician, and person in general.
