In the first section of my presentation, I will explain the project I did last year, and what didn’t work out as well as I’d wanted.
The major problem with my project last year was the fact that I didn’t put much, if any, effort into to planning the project beforehand, problem solving, organising and time keeping. This resulted in a poorly marketed and planned release of a single, when I was aiming to release a three track EP.
Linking this to the previous section, I will explain how, in this project, I want to do the same project as last year, but push myself to excel in different ways. First of which being, I am going to plan this project in detail during the proposal process, so that I don’t find myself falling behind on my schedule without realising. Secondly, I will be making a strong emphasis on marketing and artist development, as I want to use this project to help get my name out there and become a recognised artist in some respect. Finally, I want to make at least four tracks in total, however I am going to aim to make 5. Considering that I only produced one song in this time last year, it’s understandable that it may seem as though I’m way in over my head. However, with two tracks ready for mastering, and another already well on it’s way, I believe I’ll easily be able to hit make this target, without compromising my quality for quantity.
In this section, I will explain the different steps I will be taking to help prevent myself from running into different problems throughout my final project. Beginning with copyright, I will be researching into how to get the rights to different types of samples, or other copyrighted materials, to be able to release them without breaking the law. I will also talk about how I will be budgeting myself for this project when it comes to online advertising and distribution.
To be successful in this project, I must plan it properly, creating a week by week schedule to follow to ensure that I don’t fall behind. Before this, however, I need to ensure that I have planned the EP itself properly, the genre, the style of the artwork, etc. I also need to plan any collaborations, which I have two of in mind so far, and make sure that I can work with the other artists/professionals to ensure that I get the product I need for when I need it by. I will also need to research into how different artists schedule projects like this, to aid me in my own planning.
One of the main targets for this project is having successful marketing. To do this I will need to work with external graphics designers to produce a professional quality logo and EP cover, as well as banners and posters to spread around social media, college, artists I have been networking with, etc. Before this, I will need to do some research into my marketing strategies, the types of websites and organisations I am going to send my material to and the artists I want to liaise with (Influencers), etc. I am also going to look into releasing one or two singles from the EP, as well as some track previews, before the final release.
This section is particularly important to me. I will be using this section to explain how I will be using, and developing, my skills in creative music production. I will explain how following the plan and schedule will aid me in keeping up with my work and how I want to use as much of the first half of the final project to get the production work done, as to ensure I have time to work on the other major aspects of the project whilst still being able to ensure that I can get the tracks properly mastered. I will also explain how finding samples and using sound design will be particularly important to me, as my chosen genre of music is heavily dependent on having aggressive sound design. The most important part of this section for me is explaining why making my tracks sound professional is so important for me. I want this project to help me develop my skills and understanding of using DAWs, and other audio software, to create a professional quality product, so that I know how to ensure that my products can keep up with the quality that other artists in my genre are creating.
In the release section, I will explain how, if possible, I would like to make some of the money back that I will be spending, but if need be, it would be fine if I have to release my tracks for free, as for me, this project is all about me developing my skills, developing as an artist, and gaining a foothold in the music industry. In terms of distribution, I will need to explain how I want to research into the different ways I could distribute my music and how this will affect my final product.
In this section, I will explain how I plan to review and reflect upon my own work throughout the project. I will be, hopefully, holding a pre-release event, in which I will showcase some of the tracks, and survey the audience for their opinions, giving me a chance to use their feedback to change and perfect my product.
In this section, I will explain how I have already been making work on this project over the last few months, making preparations, and beginning the harder tasks now, rather than when they become a problem. Also, its a chance for me to show off the music I’ve made and explain how it received such a good reaction already.
In this final section, I will summarise my presentation, and explain my ultimate aims. This will be my opportunity to explain exactly what I want to get out of this project, and how I intend to use it to progress my career as an artist. These are my final goals, I will be following these goals until the end of my project, and then until I’ve reached them, if i haven’t already reached them.
