Composition 1: Evaluation & Reflection

What I liked about this composition:

  • The composition did what it needed to as it created an ambient sound bed for the sonnet to be read over and it fulfilled its purpose.
  • The composition created, what I felt was, a suitable emotional response that reflected that right atmosphere and tone for the sonnet.

What I disliked about this composition:

  • I felt that I could have used the 1 minute length of my composition more effectively, for example I could have added a few different variations of the melody or the bass.
  • I only used two different sounds and I felt that my composition could have benefitted from a wider instrumentation, for example I could have played some live guitar and recorded it with a microphone to give the composition a more ‘real’ sound.

What will I do differently in the future? :

In the future I will plan before I compose, this will give me something to base my composition on, for example I will take note of ideas for chord structures, effects, etc. This will allow me to make more use of my allotted time as I will have more ideas and more of a structure to fill out that space. I will also make sure that, before I begin composing, I will contact the people I am working with to get hold of the content I will be working with and I will have much more in depth conversations and meetings about what is wanted from my composition so that I can create a more suitable product. I will also attempt to widen my instrumentation more as it will give my compositions much more depth.

What has this composition taught me? :

This composition taught me a lot about creating ‘sound beds’, and even just composing in general. It taught me that music isn’t always made to be the main focus, but only, sometimes, to create a tone for something else. This doesn’t take away much from the creative aspects of composing either, it just gives the music a specific use.
