Eminem & Rick Rubin

Rick Rubin is one of the most well known and talented producers of the modern day, he is most well known for his ability to allow artists to almost reinvent their style. Recently, he has been working very closely with Eminem as they both find that they have similar process when it comes to creating and producing an album, although they also have their differences too. Rick and Eminem talk a lot about both of their creative processes in multiple different interviews, however I found that they spoke much more in depth when talking about Walk on Water by Eminem, featuring Beyoncé.

Rick makes it very clear that whilst working with Eminem, if hes started writing lyrics, the amount of changing and editing he can do to the track is very limited as he is incredibly strict and tight about how his lyrics work with the track rhythmically. He works in a very specific way and has a very certain creative process. This means that Rick, as his producer, is required to work very closely with him to ensure that the track is right before the lyric writing process begins. This makes sure that the track is up to best standard it can be before the amount of editable content in the track is restricted.

I took two things from this, one being that, some songwriters have a very certain way of working, and as a producer, you need to be able to learn how to work at your best with a songwriter as quickly as possible, to make sure that you can get the best out of each track you produce. The second being that, as a producer, you arent limited to how much you can creatively effect a track when working with a songwriter, however, sometimes it is better for the final product to allow the songwriter to take charge in most of the creative process, as they may struggle to combine their creative process with your own, just like Eminem & Rick Rubin.
