Ideas

For this project, I am going to take a general subject of music, and use it to choose a final destination for my final project, bearing in mind what I want to use my final project to do for me. I will do this via researching the subject and finding different career choices that I could follow and research them, until I am happy with my final choice and I will produce an essay documenting my research into that choice, using a minimum of 1500 words. I can also use this project to delve in and experiment with each idea individually to see if it is what I would like to continue doing, or if I believe I would even be able to do it in the first place.

I want the final project to help me;

  • Progress and develop my career as a musician.
  • Develop my skills as a musician.
  • Earn, or set the road for earning, money, if at all possible.

In general, this final project is to help me progress into being a professional in the music industry, and to help us at least get a foothold in the music industry.

My overall decision for what I want focus on during the next 3 projects, is to base my project on the use of technology in music. This was a very plain choice for me as a producer, ever since I came into college, I came with the goal of progressing myself as a creative music producer, and I have continued to stick to this decision and I have been dead set on becoming a Bassline / Bass House producer, and other job roles, like live sound engineering, would have been a back up plan of sorts for me. However, since first starting this course I have experienced and learnt how these different roles actually work, and what the key parts involved in being successful in them actually are.

Brainstorming:

Technology

  • Producing Music
    • Professionally produce & release a 4 track EP, ensuring the tracks are to a professional standard. Releasing on big platforms like iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, etcetera. Promoting myself using social media, flyers, networking, and the release of a single, etcetera. Maybe even having a release event/party with fellow DJ’s
    • Producing back beats for several different genres, like Rap, for example, has a huge industry for producers who create backing tracks to sell the license for use to artists who want to use them. I would have to produce the tracks, licences, etcetera to a professional standard, not just for my college work, but for my own legal safety as well.
  • Performing Live
    • Perform live using aspects of technology to a professional standard, at a professional venue, selling tickets, etcetera to gain an income and cover costs. Promoting the event myself using social media, flyers, networking, etcetera.
  • Education
    • Hold a ‘Basics of Music Production’ workshop for free, where I will teach participants the beginnings of how to use a DAW and its included features, tools and instruments, etcetera, to create their own simple song, or section of a song.
    • Begin teaching a few individuals how to use Ableton Live 9 as a travelling, private, one on one tutor. Going into more depth than a workshop would, but to individual people for a small cost per lesson.
  • Business
    • Travelling recording studio, taking my own equipment out with me to customers houses and setting up a recording studio and taking up the role of recording engineer for the customer, charging a small hourly rate. Doing this, I will produce a professional product by fulfilling my role efficiently and creating a recording that is up to a standard that the customer likes.

After carefully considering each idea, I came to the conclusion that I will research deeper into producing and releasing an EP, mostly as this is something that would help me progress myself as an artist, whilst still deeply enjoying myself.
