Evaluation

During this project , I feel that I succeeded in creating 3 compositions that could be used successfully for their designed purposes. In this task I learnt many new skills both as a performing musician and as a producer. These included, composing, arranging, using music software and researching ways to improve my musical output.

Personally, I feel that my production skills are very much lacking and I would love to work on them to improve them in order to be able to create a better sound in the future. This includes relatively simple things such as recording with a click track to adding affects and creating dynamic contrast. I would have loved to try out effects such as compression and EQ on different parts of my songs however I didn’t know how to do this. Therefore I will invest more time in the future to learn some more complicated aspects of logic. Another aspect of music technology I didn’t have the time to learn was syncing my music with the videos which would have made them look much more professional. In order to get better with recording with a click track, I will use a metronome much more often when practicing an instrument.

This project was the first time I had ever written music for a purpose instead of just for fun and it helped me understand the requirement that would be expected in the music industry. I really enjoyed writing music for the awards ceremony and the sonnet although it was very tough to do. Something I really need to work on is writing my ideas out on manuscript in order to reproduce them effectively.

Looking at my drum part for our band composition , I feel like it adds to the piece and it’s simplicity helps the bands overall sound. However I would love to develop and expand my rhythmic contrast such as triplets and accentuation. etc, as well as my overall confidence in creating different sounds on a drum kit. Over the past few weeks my confidence has massively grown when playing the drums, therefore hopefully as I continue to practise I will continue to improve.
