For two out of three songs in this project I was using the music software Logic 9. Prior to when I began this, I had little knowledge of how to use this software, however I quickly learnt the basics and began to successfully record and edit my ideas.
By looking at different harmonic structures in the beginning of this project, I had a much better understanding of how to structure my pieces and build upon them. Before this project I had always struggled with a starting point for a piece of music but this project made me understand how to not overcomplicate things and that you should build up from the basics.
Band composition
When writing music in our band, my main task was to develop my own part in order to fit within the band and help develop the pieces sound. As i was on the drumkit,my main focus was to keep the timing and structure in the piece. Working within a band on this project gave me the confidence to put my own ideas forward in how I thought we could improve the piece and gave me a good understanding of what I would be expected to do when writing music in a band. This included working with different people who had different ideas and learning to compromise with each other and take different ideas on board. This helped to increase my communication skills and team building skills.
Sonnet and Award compositions
For my Sonnet and award compositions , I chose to write music for multiple different instruments. This gave me a much better understanding of how to maximise the output of every instrument and in how to organised each part in an ensemble.
Some of the skills that I learnt when using Logic 9, were recording with a click track, quantising music, editing different parts of sound, looping music and adding some effects as well as changing dynamics. (The last two examples I would say I’m less confident on) however, as I quickly got to grips with the basics , I feel like it’s just a matter of practise in order to become more confident with logic 9.
The skills I learnt from using this software therefore are invaluable to the music industry and understanding how music is made in studio and on a computer. The second of which is quickly increasing in todays climate as more and more people are self producing and composing on their laptops.
