Process
week 1
How is the project going so far?
Missed first week as all morning sessions were cancelled by Bradford College due to Exams. Wednesday and Friday afternoon couldn’t make it due to medical reasons.
What did I learn?
missed out on introduction of new project information.
What could I have done better?
I could have got better picture of what the project involves and some hair rap techniques that were delivered.
What are my long time Implications?
I like to build up good teamwork with other student and be able to ask for help from others to understand better of anything I miss or don’t understand, so I can achieve what is required out of this project.
Week 2
How is the project going so far?
feel lost, some information is given, but still don’t understand what to do? looking forward to understanding and deliver what is required of this project.
What did I learn?
First time ever watched A Christmas Carols movie, picture wasn’t great, could hardly understand about the characters. had to analyse two characters from the movie which i found it very challenging, as I new nothing about the Christmas Carols, could hardly understand what was being said as the picture quality was very old and poor, but managed to write some information after asking and getting ideas of what everyone else wrote.
the Script and assignment brief was given at the end of the lesson
Assignment brief and copy of the Script is given.
Learnt hair rap techniques, i.e using gel to flatten the hair on scalp and secure with pins, creating dutch plat/french plat that can hold hair pins very secure for the wig, and applying clips and net on head again to secure hair and firm hold for the wig.
Looked at how the human matures stages
Applied cream based colour wheel application to create older looks on each other, which carried on the following day, switching the partners.
continued the next day with the practice
Task to Research on Character design for theatre – research on introduction page.
What could I have done better?
If I had the special effects book, I could have copied the image makeup of aging look. But I feel still got some ideas of what to do next time.
What are my long time implications?
I will research and find out as much information as possible on my Characters of Fan, Scrooge’s Sister ( teen/early 20’s) and Mrs Cratchit, (middle age) who is poor house wife.
week-3
How is the project going so far? know that things are falling in place, I feel like getting some sort of picture of what is expected for this project.
Practiced curling longer wigs using different size rollers on full head and then used large garments steamer run over rolled hair for it to set into curls.
had one to one with Sara this morning just to go through digital space and how we are getting on with the project so far. in the afternoon, continued with Hair Wigs curling using rollers, bendy curlers, hot bendy curlers, hot rollers on synthetics hair. Also tried poring hot water and hot steam on rolled hair for it to set curls which we will dress to Victorian times hair styles next week.
practiced Victorian style theatre makeup look.
What did I learn? I manged to pick my speed putting in curlers and bendy rollers, also used steamer and boiling water on Synthetic hair to create curls in the hair. Practiced make up look and managed to blend stick foundation really well for the first time as previously I have always made the base patchy. used pink and red for the cheeks and eyeliner to darken the eyes. overall, the look turned out ok.
What could I have done better? I feel I could have left the rollers in for longer and let the hair dry properly so the curls could have been much tighter. with makeup, I could have done the cheeks little rounder and tidier, also forgot to apply white liner to the inner eye which would have made the eyes look bigger.
Prosthetic event
What are my long time implements? I would like to stretch my skills to create better hair curls and work on eyes makeup look.
Week – 4
Carried out patch 3 different tests on the performers this morning, and colour matched the foundation base, which went really well
had a go applying different roller methods to create the Victorian hair styles.
How is the project going so far? things are making more sense now, gathering all information, pictures of everyday practical and theory work. got to meet models for project 2 l, carried out patch test and had chance to speak and take details from models.
What did I learn? carried out patch tests successfully. Using 3 different product’s, also skin matched foundation base . I also got to use different methods to curl hair, as I have never used hot bendy rollers before, so this was good experience for me.
What could I have done better?
want to learn more detailed hair dressing and wigs. I could have given another go using steamer to curl hair.
What are my long time implements?
Will make face chart and mood board for my project 2, and practice on makeup and Victorian era hair styles.
Week – 5
How is the course going so far?
I have managed to create Mood-board for my Project – 2.
This is my second Character of Mrs Cratchit’s Face chart look – She is a lower middle-class character; I am keeping her look lighter and dull as she won’t have the colourful products to apply on her face. She is mother of 5 children, so is mature lady. Hair loosely up in a bun at the back with parting in front.
This is for my main Character – Fan, She is Upper Class young girl, She can afford to buy good products to make her cheeks look Rosy, Red lips and Eyes, applies eyeliner to make her eyes pop out, hair curled and dressed up uniquely in half up half down.
What did I learn?
# The Skin Patch test came back negative.
I have created Victorian Hair Style for the first time, using bendy rollers and tongues. The plan was to use all bendy hot rollers but as model has very long and health bunch of head. I only used bandy hot rollers to the front to gain tight curls, and at the back I used tongues to speed up, I applied hair setting spray to dry hair, applied hair textured/heat protective spray. also used the hair setting mousse in the back section for curls to last. I used my own made human hair bun on top of hair for the style to adjust. sides tightly tucked up neatly and pined up curls loosely around top and front, using grip pins.
What could I have done it better? I feel the bun could have been further top on the head, that would give more attractive look, but over all Im happy how it turned out to be
What are my long time implement?
Practice and time my self on hair before the performance day. making sure to carry out makeup and hair on both models in time. Also try different products for the make up, as the grease paint eyeliner spreaded all around the models eyes which took long time to keep cleaning up and applying more concealer , but I feel it still didn’t clean up properly.
Tutor/actor feedback
Lucy was amazed by the hair style I managed to create and offered, if I wanted to jump onto degree level!! that really boosted my confidence, makeup, she suggested next time I could use eyeliner or gel as the grease paint liner smudged round the eyes. Emily loved the colours on her face and the curls in her hair, she requested if she can go out in her makeup and hair out of bun but down curly.
So I undid her updo, styled her curls with hair serum.
week – 6
Practice Assessment
My second character/actor of Mrs cratcht practice assessment, I had 1 hour 30 minutes to do make up and hair, which I managed to complete in 45 minutes. I curled hair using curling tongue, to give volume to the hair style, but I feel that took me longer, where as I could create volume by back combing, so my plan for next time is back comb. Makeup turned out simple and clean, as my actor has very sensitive eyes, she managed not to tear this time. we took pictures under the bright theatre lights, Where I noticed the lip colour showed shine and blush looked little dull.
so for next time I will apply either face powder or mat eye shadow over lips to give it mat look and brighten the blush by making it darker. I also forgot to use bun filler at the back to give fuller bun look, which next time I will definitely will try this method.
Tutors Feedback
Lucy liked the look over all and suggested I should try thiner pins in the hair next time, as the grip pins were visible in the hair, Lucy also suggested I should do the make over on the actor who will take longer to finish first. . Jasmin explained under theatre lights how the make up can shine, so she suggested make lipstick mat using powder or mat eye shadow and the blush little darker.
Second Actor Practice Assessment
My main Character/Actor Practice Assessment. I started with prepping the face by cleanse, tone and moisturise, then i moved on to the hair. I had 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the look, but Luckily I had about 20 minutes from my first look which I helped me with creating the second look, as my second Character has long and very thick hair, which took my 1 full hour just to curl using the curling tongue. makeup look turned out good but the top eyeliner smudged again although I used the gel liner, which is supposed to sit in one place and not spread. with hair, I used fake hair bun to give volume on top middle of the the head, but the stocking on the hair bun was stiff which made it difficult for gips to go through, but over all the style turned out neat and was happy it didn’t look too back on the head. I also asked my actor if she is ok for me to Spray dark brown on her bleached yellow hair, and she agreed, so I sprayed the dark brown instant (wash out) hair colour spray to give darker look, which I feel looked good on this Victorian style. Over all I was happy with the look, but due to my actors hair took too long which I run out of time to complete 2 looks in 3 hours. next tome i will do the makeover of my main Character, and use darker powder eyeliner and remove the stocking from the insert hair bun to save time.
Feedback from actor
Emily (my main character, actor) told me that she head reaction from the hair colour spray I used to darken her yellow hair a day before, she said her forehead became itchy and red, so I said we wont use the colour spray again.
today We’ve got to see the Rehearsal by actors of ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the in house theatre.
How is the course going so far?
We are coming closer to the final assessment date on 8th of December, therefor we are practicing on the actors and timing how long each takes to meet the time limit of completing 2 looks in 3 hours.
What did I learn?
Speeding up and timing of make over process is good to take challenge and work under pressure towards meeting the dead time limit.
What could I have done it better?
I feel I could have tried different products for the eyeliner on actor to see which one does not spread on her eyelids also to try hair filling pieces which the grip pins ate easy to insert.
What could I have done it better?
use smaller pins for the hair and made the lipstick matt using either loose powder or eyeshadow.
What are my long time implement?
Timing myself on the hair and trying different products to see if I can find a better solution to save my self-time to achieve the look. And try to bring digital space up to date.
week 7 – final Assessment
Different effects blending foundation with different brushes and sponges.
Hair prep Plan for the main assessment
I have checked with Luci if I can pre curl my main actor’s hair a day before as she has very thick and long hair. I can tie up in a tight a scarf using hair spray, so the curls don’t fall out. Luci is fine with that, so I have text my actor to explain her the plan and she is fine with it too. I have advised her to keep head very straight and sleep on one side so that hair don’t open. The next morning hopefully will open hair, apply serum to smooth out the curls. and start the hair styling. so yeah, hopefully that’s the plane for our final assessment day.
Dress Rehearsal Review
Mock Assessment:
Started 9.30am till 11am for the first character, the photoshoot by professional was done. 11am to 12.30am second character, photoshoot , theatre performance 1.30 till 2.30. Makeup removal was straight after the performance at the end of day.
positive in look
The look on my model turned out really good, the hair style managed to get it done in time, thanks to Lucy for asking level 2 to step in for curling assistance.
Got to watch the theatre performance live in the afternoon, and assess the makeup and hair under lights, I noticed under blue light was the bright and original makeup colours showed, where as under red light everything looked dull and red. I’m glad my actors hair looked very enhanced and stayed in place even after jumping and laying on the floor, I couldn’t see any pins or hair sticking out.
negative – can improve on
I feel the hair filler Could have been in better bun shape for the second character. On my first character’s eyes didn’t look pop out as I wanted to, I have tried all most all methods to darken top eyelids with eyeliner, as my actor has very hooded eyes nothing sets and it transfers on to the upper part of lids. I am hoping yo try using false eye lashes, hopefully that should stay up and give eyeliner effect too.
My second actor look turned out better than I thought۔
Hair Plan for the Final Assessment
It was planned to curl my actor’s hair a day before and rap it in a scarf or a hat so the curls would remain in place for the next day, but realised yesterday during the mock assessment that the final assessment doesn’t start until 11am on Thursday the 8th, so we can come in at 9.30 to prep the hair, so this plan has worked out better and just in time before the assessment time starting.
Problem solved
I managed to apply eye lash and liquid eye liner which she had to keep her eyes closed until the liner was fully dried on my first actor,. My second actor had very sensitive eyes and could not apply eyeliner with out watering, so I applied it to bottom lash below the hair line. I found bunch of synthetic hair, which I rolled and stitched with threaded needle in to sausage roll for my second actor low bun as the one that was available was too stiff and too bendy, this has given softer and better shape to her bun.
1st look-Method of makeover for the final day
I prepped the skin by cleanse, tone, moisturised, I didn’t use the primer as I used the Kryalon foundation stick which would not set on normal primer ( I did not have one which can be used under stick foundation), I applied foundation to make the base and set with loose powder, I then contoured the features to give definition and applied pink blush to cheeks, On eyes I applied red/pink eyeshadow blended well, applied false lashes and let it set until then I filled the eyebrows with brow filler, by now the lash glue was dried, so tried risking for the liquid top liner but asked the actor not to open her eyes until the liner has dried, once the liner dried and she opened her eyes, wow!! it worked, the liner did not move from its place, makeup fixing spray all over her face to fix set the make up, and moved on to Hair, took out the clips and run my hand over with hair serum for shine, rolled up 4-5 curls and pined to make base for the pins to grip, then placed the hand made bun filler to the top of mid head and pined up half curled hair and the front section i placed at the front just above mid parting leaving tiny parting with sides tightly pined up at the sides and curls mostly in the middle/top of the head loosely pined up with bottom part left opened, all over hair sprayed foe any fly way hair and to set the style. sent her to change in to costume for the pictures. (please see below)
Second look
I prepped the skin with cleanser, toned and moisturised. Moved on to Hair, sectioned front parting to ear both sides, back sectioned comb and tightly tied at the nape with pony band. backcomb bottom pony added hair spray to lock the back combing. applied the hand made sausage shaped bun filler and rolled over the pony and fixed with grip pins. front section back comb, added hair spray to fix, neatly comb hair over the ears back on top of the bun tucked ends in with pins. Makeup – applied Kyralon Stick for the base and added little liquid foundation to set the stick base, applied loose powder, after contouring for the features enhancement, I applied peach/brown mixed colour for blush blended well, used the same for the eyeshadow blended well and applied little darker shadow to the outer corners of eyes, applied top liner and added lashes, as she her eyes are very sensitive, I applied bottom liner at the bottom of her lash line to void eyes watering, dusted little blush colour to the tip of nose, makeup fixing spray all over the face to set make up and sent her to change in to her costume so I can take photos. (please see below)
prepping for the Final Assessment
Before and after my first actor ”Fan”
Second actor – Mrs Cratchit
Quick-Feedback from Tutor
Lucy liked the idea of me keeping the makeup shades different for both actors according to the role they were playing. she praised the hair curl/style once again, she liked how the photos turned out especially with both actors together in the same picture.
How is the course going so far?
everything going to plan, apart from the digital space, which is really messing up with saving the research. I have put so much time in research and applied information on my project 2 pages all last week but been very frustrating as each time I have gone back the most of the time has gone missing. The Budget information I had to re do about 5 times in the last 3 days. as I have only used digital space for my research and all input, I feel anxiety saving and uploading pages from different places, as I feel I will forget to add some pages.
What did I learn?
I feel confident now to input my own ideas to the look I am creating, the hair details seem so much fun now. just need keep practicing.
What could I have done it better?
Maybe I could have tried few different hair styles on the actor’s hair, which there might have been a style that takes up less time curling so I have less pressure to complete my look in time. I feel, I could have applied contour little darker to chin areas for both of my actors, which next time I will surely keep in mind .
What are my long time implement?
I feel the experience and the skills from the project 2 will help me to produce better work in my next project. I will research and work on more mood boards to practice the ideas and also practice blending on the face charts is must for me to enhance my blending skills, I also fell hard to apply bottom eyeliner on my clients eyes, this is something I will try and learn tricks of how to talk them in and make them where to look to void watery eyes and feel comfortable. I also need to gain more confidence in using the right brushes and blending techniques when creating any look. and learn more about full coverage foundation and colour correct so the base does not look grey.
Hair Cut and dress opportunity
As I had complained my project 2, I had spare time and not had much to do, so I requested tutor Jaz ( who had long and thick weaved hair), that if I could practice cutting and dressing her hair, and she agreed, so i had the opportunity to practice in the class on real hair. I shampooed, towel dry and layer cut, dried with hair dryer and straightened with straightened which looked really nice on Jaz, but as i didn’t have enough time to cross check which I carried out the next day and managed to persuade her to let me curl her hair with straightener, and she kindly agreed. Thanks Jaz for letting me practice on your long hair which has given me more confidence.
had end of project/ term – Christmas Party. with some home made food and cakes! It was lovely get together. Thank you everyone❤️
