Project 1: Performing Arts

Stanislavski

What are seven elements of Stanislavski’s system?

  • Emotional memory
  • The magic if
  • Given circumstances
  • Subtext
  • Circles of attention
  • Super objectives and Objectives
  • Through line of action

What’s the aim of Stanislavski’s style of acting? The aim of Stanislavski’s style of acting is to give a realistic and lifelike performance that feels authentic and real to the audience.

How did you apply given circumstances to a character? I applied given circumstances to a character by using it to help me better understand apply the characters background into my acting, by exploring my characters motivations and how this might make me act of feel in that situation and taking into consideration where and when my character is as this could also dictate how my character might feel or behave for example if my character was from the 1800’s and it was the winter months they may be wearing a different style of clothes changing how the character may walk and also how my characters dialog and language. my characters relationships could also influence my behaviours around different characters. Using given circumstances can also influence my characters emotional responses and how they may act from situation to situation.

What did you like about using given circumstances? What I like about given circumstances is the creative freedom it gives you to create a characters background and history and truly bring authenticity and realness that role. I like that even if the part is a well known persona you can still bring your own reflections, thoughts and imagination to that role and play it how you think that character would be. I like being able to create a character’s background in depth and give a real meaning to that role, I like the creative freedom to make a character come from a different time and use accents.

Were there any elements you didn’t like? No there weren’t any elements that I like as I really enjoy being able go into depth about a characters background and I think that it really helps when performing as a role in being able to bring realness and authenticity to a role and really make an audience believe you are the persona that you are playing.

How did you apply objectives/super objectives to a character? I applied objectives and super objectives to a character by giving my character a reason or motive as to what they want ultimately in a scene or a piece overall.

What did you like about using objectives/super objectives?

Were there any aspects of it you didn’t like?

Devising: The Investigations

What happened?

What did you learn?

How will you apply this in future?

Eden Camp
What happened? We went to Eden Camp, A World War Two museum known for its immersive experience of giving visitors a real life feeling of what it would have actually been like for a range of different people throughout the war. Including what a dance hall would have been like during that era, a real street during the Blitz, a different range of shops of the era, different work spaces during the war, different houses and what it would have been like for different people, we also got to have a glimpse into what it would have been like for prisoners of war held right there at Eden camp, starting off with the Italian prisoners of war that helped to build Eden camp itself and then the German POWS who remained there until around 1949.

What did you learn? I learnt more about the harrowing impacts of world war 2 and the nock on effects it had for hundred of thousands of people across the world. I learnt how the war looked different for different people and how it affected everyone’s daily life’s no matter what walks of life they came from. I learnt how our British soldiers were treated so poorly in oversea prisoner of war camps to the likeness of those who suffered and perished in Nazi concentration camps, including starvation, no medical help or guidelines, poor treatment as well as inhumane beatings and gruelling manual labour. I learnt how Italian and German prisoner of wars who were held in England specifically Eden camp were treated a landslide better than our armed forces were including being treated like human beings, aloud to have hobbies and even a nice sleeping quarters, adequate clothing, access to proper food etc.

How will you apply this in future? I will use this and apply it in the future to my research and general knowledge of ww2, I will use this help me with my general performance during our first project to be able to bring some realness and authenticity to the characters I will be playing.

Stage Combat with Jack
What happened? Jack came in a spoke to us and taught us about stage Combat and how to do this in a safe and controlled environment whilst be able to authentically portray a fight on the stage whilst also keeping safe and ensuring that nobody actually gets hurt.

What did you learn? I learnt how to somewhat effectively stage fight and different combos such as ducking a dodging.

How will you apply this in future? I will use this if any stage fighting during a performance is needed to be used.

Comedy Workshop with Joe

What happened? Joe came in who is a known clown/ comedian who studied at a clown school in France who previously taught the likes of Jacques Lecoq, he came to teach about using slapstick comedy and humour for our upcoming project about WW2. He taught us some different techniques and warm up/ focus games, such as a focus exercise in which a person had to do something with a object without being given direction and also helped us to come up with some different scripts for our ideas and give them slapstick comedy.

What did you learn? I learnt how to be indirectly funny within dialogue and better improvise my speech and actions, I also learnt more about reading the audiences reaction and convey body language and facial expressions further.

How will you apply this in future? I will use this in the future to help with my writing skills and adding subtle slapstick comedy into our coming scripts for our first project.
