RECORDING

my recording process

My recording process was fairly simple as all for the most part all I had to do was record vocals on my tracks as well as record an Acoustic Version of my songs.

vocal recording

To record my vocals in the recording studio I used a condenser microphone with a pop filter on. I positioned it away from the computer and speakers. I also had it high enough that I would have to stand up properly to sing so that my I wasn’t slouched and would get the best vocals. The successes of this were the fact that I could easily record as it was a small room and it had all the equipment I needed to record my vocals. This made it easily accessible for me and the process would be quicker with everything set up.

However on some of my vocals, due to it being near a classroom, you can hear other people talking through the microphone from the other room. My mixing engineer luckily helped to reduce this noise as much as possible, but this did become a problem on a few snippets, especially when actually recording as I had to then re record a section of the song. To solve this, I could have set up my recording section in the other recording studio to eliminate any other noise.

acoustic version

For my Acoustic recordings, alongside the tutors, I set up a piano with two small diaphragm condenser microphones, one on the left and one on the right to create a stereo sound and we did this so we could control the sound equally through both sides to create a good balance of sound. We also set up a regular condenser microphone for vocals.

The successes of this setup were the the fact that it made it sound intimate and you could also hear every breath as well as every lyric. This made the songs sound more emotional and connecting. The fact that it was a piano that was set up rather than a keyboard also made it sound more authentic and acoustic.

The improvements that could have been made is that you could hear the vocals on the piano microphones. Therefore the sound was bleeding between each of the microphones, this meant that when mixing, it was harder to control the sound. Even though this was an issue, the final outcome was even better than I expected and I loved the sound of the piano and vocals. I recorded ‘Into the Blue’, ‘Underwater’ and ‘Idon’tseemtoloveyoursmileanymore.’ However I only chose 2 to be featured on my EP as I wanted to chose the best ones to include. The ones I chose were: ‘Underwater’ and ‘Idon’tseemtoloveyoursmileanymore.’
