PROBLEM SOLVING

Risk assessment

tracks could be incomplete by the EP release date

POSSIBILITY: I could run out of time to complete all my tracks or I could dislike the tracks and therefore not want to include them on the EP, therefore this would mean that I would not have any time to adjust the tracks on my schedule and the outcome would mean that my EP would not be available for the release date.

OUTCOME: I didn’t run out of time to the release date, however the problem I encountered was the fact that I didn’t like the final City of Street Lights. This meant that I had to adjust it which cost time and took time from completing the other songs. To ensure that this didn’t become a bigger problem I ensured to complete the other songs first before adjusting this song any further, this meant that most of my EP would be completed for the release date, even if I didn’t want to include this song.

I could get ill/lose my voice

POSSIBILITY: This could potentially effect the whole project especially if I take time from the process of the EP, or it could effect the Final Performance which would mean that I wouldn’t be able to perform or I could have a potentially different version of the songs to ensure that I still completed my Final performance and project.

OUTCOME: Luckily, this didn’t occur as it would have dramatically effected the outcome of my project. If this did happen I would have had to still try and complete my EP to ensure that it was completed.

I could dislike the finished mixes

POSSIBILITY: This would mean that I would not have enough time to change the final outcome of my songs as the mixing is scheduled for the last couple of weeks. This would therefore suggest that my EP would be incomplete for the release date.

OUTCOME: Fortunately I preferred the final mixes that were made by the mixing engineer from the original mixes that I made. I believe the final mixes made the songs come to life and gave them more character.

I could go off track from the schedule

POSSIBILITY: This could be caused by other factors such as: not liking the final outcome, artwork not received in time or whilst in production I could not like the flow of the piece or the instrumentation and may want to start the piece again, as I want to ensure that the final version of each song is perfect.

OUTCOME: During the start of the process, I realised that it may take me longer to produce each track, as I started off producing City of Street Lights I didn’t like the sound of the whole piece produced, as I preferred the acoustic sound of it. From this I had three options: to include an acoustic version of the song, to continue with the song and trusted the final mixing and process or to not include the song all together. The option I chose was to continue, as if I didn’t like the final product, I could just not include it but still show the process of the production. At least then I would have still had completed that song and I had a chance of still liking the sound of the piece at the end. Luckily, the final mix made it come to life and make it sound exactly as I wanted it to sound, therefore I included this song in my EP.

I could dislike the artwork/photography

POSSIBILITY: The possible outcome would mean that I would have to do my own photography/artwork and therefore this could put my EP out of schedule.

OUTCOME: This did occur and therefore I have taken my own photography and done my own artwork as the artwork that was produced for me was not good enough to include for the promotion or cover of the EP.

This is a video explaining what I want to include in my artwork to a set of media students.

This is what I received from the media students after suggesting what I wanted:

I may not have enough time to practice for the Final Performance

POSSIBILITY: This would result in being unprepared and therefore not performing the songs as I wanted them to be performed. This would also result in possibly less sales of my EP as people may not enjoy my live set and therefore they wouldn’t be interested in purchasing my EP.

OUTCOME: I had lots of time to prepare on my schedule and I had also practiced the songs several times beforehand so that the songs would be ready to record on my Acoustic EP therefore they were also ready for the Final Performance and Mock performances. This meant that both gigs were successful.

I could run out of finance for promotion and distribution

POSSIBILITY: This may cause the sales of my EP to not be as many as I had hoped for. This could mean that my EP would not get the recognition that it deserves. However it would not affect the schedule of my EP as my EP would still be available on the same date.

OUTCOME: This problem has not occurred, however in the future if I am spending money on the creation of the EP I need to take into mind the amount that everything costs and put in place a secure budget for everything.

the acoustic versions could not successful

POSSIBILITY: The possible outcome of this would mean that these would not be released and the EP would just be released with 4 tracks on it. This would not entirely effect the outcome of my EP, but it would mean that it wouldn’t show the capability of the adaptations that I can make within my music and if I was going to use my EP to get further gigs then they won’t see my full potential.

OUTCOME: The acoustic versions were successful and they were very vulnerable and I enjoyed recording them. It taught me more about recording and the variety of positions for microphones and the types of microphones, in the future I would like to release more acoustic versions of my songs as I believe it adds some variety within my music.

backing tracks not ready for Final Performance

POSSIBILITY: The possible outcome of this would mean that I would have to perform a full acoustic set rather than having a few backing tracks to perform to. This would mean that I wouldn’t have a range of resources/instrumentation to perform to.

OUTCOME: This did occur, which meant that I had to perform an acoustic set, however in a way I had not prepared with any backing track off of my EP in any of my Mock Performances, so it would have been safer for me to play a full acoustic set originally.
