What i did for my composition

Firstly i researched to get some inspiration and i came across a song composition for the sonnet i had to compose for.

I started off by thinking of the right mood for the composition to ensure is suits to the sonnet and will represent the right mood, tone and meaning. Since the sonnet is ablout a mans love to a lady, I thought it should be a slow composition. Since i chose the tempo to be slow i thought the melody shouldn’t be very slow, because the sonnet doesnt include death in it or heart break, I wanted to balance it out so that it wouldn’t sound too emotional.

I have composed my score on logic pro 9. I chose the scale to be C major, the reason of that is because C major signature is very common. I chose the time signature 4/4 as that is the easiest and the most common time signature.

For the first two bars the chords i chose and played were Am – G – F – G, fot then for other and last two bars i changed it to Am – G – F – Em. The reason i changed it slightly by adding an Em chord is because that added slightly more emotion to it. I wanted to add more emotion because for the other two bars i changed the melody by adding more notes to it and i believed that adding an Em chord would keep the same mood going.

I started composing by playing and recording the chords first and quantized it to make sure it was all in time. Four bars was exactly 1 minute long. Then I added arpeggios which created the melody, and for the first bar i just left it with chords and arpeggios. For the second bar i added texture by playing bass notes a lower octave on the piano. I also added some astrings for some instrumental texture. Then i added polyphonic texture by adding a melody and more notes that were playing at the same time. For pitching, in the third bar I added more strings but an octave higher. Then I changed the arpeggios by adding more notes, which made the texture more dense and full. For the ending I struggled as i didnt know what to do for quite some time. I ended it with a low D note that ended up working out. Then i edited it and added slight reverb to make the score more put together.
