For task 2 we was given the audio file from our college bands composition “Lonely road” that was previously recorded to give us an idea of what it will be like for the final recording sessions. The audio file was then given t us so that we could play around with mixing it. The ending result of the mixing wasn’t as important as this was aimed for a practical purpose to start us off with the mixing.
The song is not loud enough. The overall song is dull and indistinct. The instruments sound colourless and some were muffled. The piano even had a buzzing sound.
These are the screenshots of all the tracks included in the song. These screenshots show exactly what EQ is applied to each track. I started off with adjusting the sound levels. What i thought would be a good idea was mixing the drum kit well as that would pick the song up and make it sound more alive. I applied EQ to the drum kit and made it sound clearer as it sounded a bit dulled out. Then i tried my best to make the bass and guitar sound the clearest it could almost as if it was recorded separately in a small room. The tricky part for me was the keys and the vocals. For the keys i had to eliminate the buzzing sound. I played around with EQ and i had to dull the sound or the keys a bit for the buzzing sound to disappear. For the vocals i adjusted the sound so that you could hear the vocals whilst all the instruments were playing. Ant’s voice was a bit quieter than it should’ve been, I turned it up so that it was levelled out with my singing part. I turned him up a bit more as he was rapping and i have a higher pitched voice.
Evaluation
I believe that this practical was both successful and not. The reason for that was, because i mixed the instuments, especially the drum kit, and it sounded clearer in comparrison to the raw recording. On the other hand i believe that i could’ve done far more better with the vocal mixing. I could of added effects to the singing.
I set myself a target for the next practical i would do which were, to practice on vocal mixing.
